• Are there any over the counter medications for dogs with anxiety? I just want my dog to chill out a big. He’s always on edge

  • CBD stuff? No idea if it works on them but I've seen it marketed.

  • The best medicine is you, constant reassurance. Every dog varies in character, from laid back through on edge to bloody bonkers, I have enjoyed 7 generations of different characters. You can't alter their character, but you can moderate it.

  • Introducing Owen, lurcher x deerhound pup collected from Wales yesterday, settling in like a champ. Reckon he's gonna be big.

  • Dorwest Herbs Scullcap & Valerian Calming Tablets

  • You're going to have your hands full there! He looks great, enjoy.

  • Haha, cheers mate - yep, expect nothing less.

  • What a cutie!

  • He's like a little tiger. So cute.

Rupert our greyhound just had the neighbours cat in his mouth and as a consequence the cat climbed to the top of our tree whilst escaping. Had to get the BIG ladder. Cat seemed okay but now we know he's not cat-friendly. The cat was at the other end of the garden so presumed it had plenty of time to escape but no. Could have been a lot worse.

  • Thanks!

Eech, that must have been mildly terrifying. Glad you you/Rupert avoided the bloodbath. Hoping to socialize ours with some friendly cats as soon as he's allowed out of the house, but I know the instinct can never be considered entirely absent....

  • Not the best day out for Nori but i was pleasantly surprised how dog friendly some of the furniture spots in central were. General rule of thumb was if they were older/more expensive they were really good with her (Heals/Boconcept/John Lewis) but if they were newer and more flashy looking then much less so. Unfortunately she was too dehydrated to piss on any furniture so no cheap shop soiled items available.

Also i'm the c*nt with a bad back who can't pick her up but refuses to take the lift so she has a little cut on her paw from the stair dogmincemeat machine to thank me for. Sorry pup.

  • Take the lift. It might smell of piss, but that's probably a bonus to her.

I can carry mine, but not one-handed, so it's non-moving stairs or lifts only on the tube.

  • From the streets of Athens to the golf club thread. She's come a long way.

  • Bit of a day today....

I'm on holiday on Exmoor and was walking my lot along Bossington beach when my youngest lab, Murphy, started shaking his head violently. I thought he had something stuck between his teeth but no, it was a discarded double hook fishing rig with bait intact that he'd picked up. One hook was embedded firmly in his tongue, the line was wrapped around his leg and the other hook was flailing around. It was a mile and a half back to the vehicle, I have no idea about the local vets and that left me with limited choices.

I grabbed hold of the poor bugger, disentangled the line from his leg, praying that the other hook stayed free of him (and me) and burned through the line with a lighter just above the flailing hook. So far so good, but the remaining hook was still central in his tongue and beyond the barb, it was about a size 1/0, 2" long.

I wouldn't recommend this, but I decided to remove the hook myself, I have fished all my life and have had to remove hooks from myself so I know how much it hurts. We both had to trust each other, him implicitly because I haven't let him down before and me because I had both hands in a mouth that could easily lessen my finger count. The long and short of it is that the hook was out in about a minute, which is sometimes a lifetime.

Murphy was happy immediately, his tongue stopped bleeding within 10 minutes and he was completely back to himself by the time we walked back. Maybe I should have taken him to the vet once I'd found one, but the thought of a half hour walk with a fucking great hook working its way deeper, plus the trauma of the drive, vet visit and inevitable general anaesthetic outweighed this.

I needed a couple of pints at the nearest pub to calm down and now at 11pm still have a stress headache and a rational urge to find and maim a thoughtless cunt.

  • Ps: Murphy and Stella right now, the other two are cheerfully farting and snoring on the sofa.

  • Good job. Glad you’re both ok, just remember to check for signs of infection over the next couple of weeks. Dogs have a low susceptibility to tetanus, but you might want a vet’s opinion in this case.

  • Sounds like you made the right call to me. Good job.

  • Xl bully to be banned. Just need to ban the owners now

  • Wonder if this will be another thing that's banned and they do nothing about it.

  • My little idiot

  • Bloody hell, quick thinking. I’m reasonably acquainted with fish hooks but don’t think I’d have balls to remove one from my dog.
I live near a canal and was chatting with another border terrier owner whose pet snaffled the baited hook of a fisherman as they walked by. Required full on surgery to rectify, grim.

  • That’s put a smile on my face as well as theirs…

  • Was in Cheltenham visiting family last week, had dinner in our dogs namesake restaurant.
Fairly sure it was his name that got us a table (without a 3 hour wait)

  • The obligatory family photo on Rockford Bridge, everyone as good as new, traumas forgotten.
