  • Arthur Guinness was a deeply religious man whose personal motto was Spes Mea in Deo, Latin for "My Hope is in God". Although he never converted to Methodism during his life, instead remaining a member of the Church of Ireland, his diaries indicate that his faith was influenced by that of John Wesley and the Methodist model of evangelical social work.
