  • Somebody called?

  • That looks great

  • Can not wait for this.

    Has a colour been decided?

  • Looks like there will be only stickers, no paint

  • seems like we're all gonna have to step up on the sticker donations. might be able to spare one of these, upon receipt of proof of decibels and/or ratchet design schematics

  • it's a hope pro2 evo with zero grease, sounds like an a-10

  • APPROVED

  • Do you have any 'silent but deadly' stickers?

  • Hope there is paint. Seen too many lovely bikes disintegrating due to the steel left ‘raw’. Not ideal when performance steel tubes are like 0.4mm thick

  • all the parts sent to denmark, bikes paid for, bags paid for, now we wait to pick it up in october from germany

cant reccomend @Hulsroy and @Tijmen enough, truly. they get a good rep on this forum already but their work, communication and end product is second to none.

tijmans bags, benefit both from someone who's a trained engineer but also agnostic or jaded towards the profession. Made with such a clinical eye for detail yet with no neglect towards design. often artists are clouded by the hubris of their passion for beauty and unable to transform those intentions into product which lasts as it's blasted with spray from the road or rubbed against a cafe wall. engineers often find themselves dumbfounded when a customer tries to articulate that it might not be optimal functionally but it's preferred aethetically. Tijjy' rides the line well, the sharp modernist design from his german surroundings, fused with an eye for detail and a head for precision that you do not often see in the bike industry, and when you do you pay a premium many cannot afford. even in the custom world.

I've been using his bags for 2 years now, some of the earliest he made, they've not missed a beat. to have some fresh ones, taking into account all he's learned? a real treat

Now obviously i have not recieved hulroys product yet, for all we know it might be matchsticks and glue and he could be spending the rest of the money on lego. but i think we've seen enough of his work where we can all understand it seems to be holding up just fine, that cargo bike with a family on board hasn't broken apart yet.

so for utility and preformance there is no question, no doubt. we can sit back and apreciate the craftsmanship he's shared over this build from his own thread. when i approached him i said "just stick me some tubes together, real quick, surly". this mans real quick? beautifully sanded fillets, wonderful hand bent details and a level of finish seen by builders you'd ogle on insta (with the comfort of knowing they do not have questionable political views, eh, sachs?). i'm sure some of the wealthy IT managers here could get something truly bespoke which goes above and beyond with a nice cheque book.

the transaction has been delightful, although digital it's like being in the shop with the craftsman, a stern tone to the messages which is warm, parental, a guiding hand to not only bring your ideas to steel, but also guide you past the more frivolous or naieve thoughts you might have or desire. the intention, i gather from speaking to him, is to build a bike that's worth building, not one that will snap pics on insta and be forgotten; be replaced in two years (of course he's a savvy business man and will not turn down requests for multiple frames, maybe even suggest you another). even if the glitz of the frame falls, the lustre of the new new dwindles as you oggle a new sunday best, you will be left with a bike which has a long life as a commuter, grocery getter, winter bike, day tripper or family wagon that just feels... a bit special.

for as hulsroy often tries to communicate, we have enough junk in this world, why add to it. the bicycle is one of the few man made contraptions that hasn't fucked up this planet, they should come from this earth, made of steel, be ridden on it and eventually return to it, long after the buyer has. dreaming that one day, someone is posting its serieal number on lfgss in 2080 when mads has got his feet up 6ft under

so if you're on the fence of either of these two guys offerings, drop them a pm

  • often artists are clouded by the hubris of their passion for beauty and unable to transform those intentions into product

    I feel attacked

  • Well-deserved and well-written praise.
@Maj you are the only person on this forum that can keep my ultra-short attention span for long enough to read such lengthy posts.

  • Does anyone have a bike bag I can borrow to take to Germany, ideally someone I can pick it up from in London?

Around October 10th-oct 16th and likely a week either side of those dates

    it’s going on a plane

  • Custom Hulsroys come with import avoidance bags

Edit: just be clear there's a bag to bring back the bike

  • some sad news to the build.

Hulsroy very kindly offered to build my bike up for the show, with the parts on the previous pages, this was originally supposed to take place before the show but learning from experience hulsroy rightly asked for the parts ahead of time in denmark. Asking me to ship the parts and acknowledging, if any of you have seen my sales threads, i hate shipping, said he'd powder the frame for the cost of powder and ensure it was crisp and ready to ride.

a tempting offer, if anyones seen the care hulsetta puts in his own bikes and knowing it was for the show, i obliged. i packed all the parts up and some extra for hulsoppi as a tip or bike friendship bracelett, such as the matching panda thomson stem and sent them tracked, in 3 business days, to denmark and all was going swimingly and customs was paid.

    the days went on

    nord post we both said

but the silence was unbarable and hulsy' needed these parts for the show; to test tyres before we decided on the final width, colour and tread pattern for reblogs. you know, as normal people do.

we caved, he contacted nord post who again,

    Took a few days,

    a few more days,

    before it arrived

"ello, ah you see the packahge is lohst haha, how u say contact your courier and get the insurance? haha you know we ahd mikkel luk on his snus break and he did not see anything, aha, you know how it is eh?"

dread set in for us both, huls needing parts for the show, me seeing irriplacable parts go up in smoke. ofc, the parts were not fully insured, but regardless of insurance, any enthusiast knows you cannot insure what is out of production, most these parts were customised by my own hands or ebay deals, gifts from friends, what you supposed to do, ensure for thousands of pounds? pay hundereds on import fees? nievety is something i'm known for, but i do not feel like a fool.

as i said to hulsroj, we cannot live our lives expecting the worse to happen.

the bike will be built for the show, hulsonator is working those contacts like a mechanical masseuse

as for my bike? who knows. i have spent so much money on this project it has become a bit of a black hole, i definately cannot justify more any time soon. what was a irrisponsible, albeit beloved purchase that is now one racked with guilt and a tinge of loss. that's before it gets any import fees. with this in mind there is worse problems in the world than someones custom bike build encountering issues and going over budget, this is not written for sympathy.

i'm writing this post after this has all happened, it has been a week or so since we knew what was going on, confirmation came a few days ago. in this time i've been quite sick (im doing well, just sick), im supposed to fly out to germany next week to go to the show, pick what is now just a frame up, a lovely frame, one that will bring years of joy im sure. but one which is tinged with some sadness and will undoubtedly be sore for some time as it sits leaned against my wall, hidden behind warhammer boxes and good intentions. collecting dust and laundry i've failed to put away.

the idea of this bike was to buy one you want to ride not just now, but in years to come, i guess this is the true test of this principle. a twist of irony i apreciate.

i guess i was spurred to write this when scrolling insta just now, sipping the absalute worst coffee i've ever made when i came accross a @Babyldn post about things that had influenced them recently, one being wheelie kids and bmx bars. it made me think of what started this, riding that silly 1x1 round the pump track with the tall bars, not riding far, but enjoying it. it bought a spark of enjoyment for bikes i'd not felt for many, many months. which is good news for the frame as im not sure hulsinio really wanted to build an ornate towel rail.

  • @Maj, I don't know you, but I've lurked on this thread for a long time and it's bought me much humour and vicarious excitement for each of your builds. I can only imagine how galling this must have been - especially with the anticipation of a built bike collection at Bespoked!

I don't have many spares any more, but it might be worth sticking a list of what you need in the thread. If I have anything in my spares box that you need I'd be happy to send it to you FOC.

  • Oh shit @Maj that sucks hard.
The sweetest apples are on the tallest branches.

  • Ah fuck.
Can relate, our wedding rings (less money than those parts, but almost as important) never made it further than Frankfurt customs the first time on their way from London to Berlin.
    Probably still behind some shelf.
We eventually got rings in time for our first anniversary.

Bike will turn out great anyway, and as above, let us know what you need.

  • hey maj - that's really gutting to hear.
hope the parts find there way back to you or hulsroy somehow.
same as mf, i have a few parts knocking around that i'd be happy to donate to get you rolling in the mean time. stick a list up and i'm sure something can be done.

  • oh no! gutted! I was really looking forward to seeing how this bike turned out! will join the queue of people offering bits from the spares bins in the hopes of getting it out from under the laundry...

  • This is extremely distressing, many sympathies.
