  • I would like a super basic and very small running watch. With time, distance, pace and HR (not necessarily built in, could be ant+). What options do I have?

  • I'm really happy with my Forerunner 45. Bought it 2nd hand a year ago and hasn't really missed a beat. GPS lock usually within 30 seconds, optical HR relatively accurate for steady efforts.

  • I've been very happy with my Forerunner 35. It's Bluetooth rather than ant+, but has optical HR or can connect to a HR strap.

  • Forerunner 35 is probably closest, but even that's too big. I hate having something on my wrist. Are the Garmin Vivoactives or Fitbits too bad?

  • I know fitbits aren't accurate for HR like upto 20 Bpm out I've got and had a few forerunners and they've all been fine. Polar FT series are smaller I had a Ft1 or 2 and it was reliable

  • The Coros Pace 2 is not small but it's very light.

  • I have a Fitbit Charge 5 as I also wanted something small. It does time, distance, pace and HR.

I went from running with Underarmour connected shoes, which might be an option for you if you don't want anything on your wrist? The distance and pace recorded by the shoes and the Charge 5 are pretty much identical every run.

I don't like the way the Fitbit stores historic run data and find it difficult to compare runs. I was using Mapmyrun before that and found it much better when I wanted to look back.

I considered adding a Polar Verity Sense to record HR with the UA connected shoes, but figured it would be a little more faff to get the data into Mapmyrun, so tried the Charge 5.

The HR data from the Charge 5 does seem a little off when I'm running, but I really have nothing to compare it to - it always says I'm in peak range and I've never had a run when it says I've been in cardio range. It records my resting HR as 59, which I think is accurate. Happy to share a run's HR data if it helps.

  • Thanks, that’s really helpful.

I assume you can export from Fitbit to trainingpeaks or Strava?

  • You can borrow my old forerunner 235 for a bit to see if you get on with it?

I hate having something on my wrist

Yeah, in general the forerunners are not that comfortable. I tend to only put it on when I'm running.

  • Until you asked this I didn't think I could, but a quick Google had the Fitbit synced to Strava in no time!

  • Might go down the Fitbit route then

    Thanks all

  • Can anyone recommend really wide trail/running shoes for kids? Size 3.5 or 4
My lad has width size G

I suppose he’s getting into wide foot woman sizes…what brands are most accommodating? He was in Saucony peregrines, but they are too narrow

  • Hoka are quite wide

  • Another Berkley short film

  • Not sure if here's the spot or elsewhere but my Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR has died a death and I need to replace...

Ideally would like long battery, wrist hr monitor (newer ones seem to have oxygen level too which sounds good) and good GPS for Strava compatibility... don't explicitly need adventure features but not opposed to them.
Ideally also something that looks OK for daily wear...
Do I get a new Suunto 9 or is there something else out there worth trying?

  • Salomon sense ride 4 pretty good formmy wideish feet and think they had a women's model

  • I mentioned it on the last page but the Coros Pace 2 seems like a good choice for long battery and hr without a lot of adventure features (although I think they've just added some).

  • some pain in my achilles after a 15km run on Sunday. Finished the run with no pain but it got sore as the day wore on. Few days rest and it had gone but then a gentle 5km today, it reappeared.

It's quite mild and I can walk around with only very minor discomfort but wondering what recovery looks like. I've got my first ever HM in a month and don't want to lose training time if I can help it...

  • localised to the achilles? Have you tried anything such as magnesium rub, ibruprofen gel etc?

  • got a hold of some gel, will gave it a go. Noticed some swelling in the area which doesn't bode too well...

  • @fredtc if you’re still looking for a small watch my old Garmin Forerunner 15 is available, the only catch is, it sometimes stops working.

  • That’s a very nice offer but I already have a half working garmin 35. Thank you though

  • If your serious about the HM get to a good physio stat. One of my big lessons is to get to the best appropriate medical care I can at any sign of issue asap.

Could be a bunch of things that caused/causing it.

  • My wife has 37 feet (lol) and uses sportiva. They have some wide ones too. Might be worth a try.
