  • if cheap is the main thing you can get one from decathlon. They do fully waterproof fully unbreathable type things for almost nothing and probably quite decent things for not much more.

Otherwise I saw finisterre had some discount smocks recently if you're an S or M

  • Presumably people who don't speak English.

    Americans, so yes 🌚

Interesting answers though, thanks all. Seems I was not fully aware of its textbook use(s), but I'm happy to be in the retrogrouch camp till I find myself telling my partner they look "really aesthetic in that."

    And @chez_jay would rep

  • Unless they've made changes, the hoods on those finisterre waterproofs are terrible. No way to cinch down onto your head, so don't stay on in the wind, and don't move with you when you turn to look over a shoulder.

  • While we are talking about waterproofs, what is a good reproofing treatment nowadays? Haven't used one for a long time and my jacket has turned porous .

  • Nikwax tech wash followed by tx-direct wash-in is still my go-to

It definitely works best if you can tumble dry the garment on low heat after proofing to get a better seal/bond/whatever it is that happens.

  • Nikwax do a 2 part proofer that you bung in the washing machine. It worked fine on a ski jacket I used to have.

  • Do you think I could fit a Brompton front bag mount to this frame?

  • Do you mean the DWR has worn off the outer face of a hardshell (goretex, etc)? Because that's just to keep it breathable in the rain, and shouldn't let water in.

Anyway, I assume it's still Nikwax or Granger's unless something new has come along.

  • Is there an app or website framework for logging visits to a set of things? Eg a football fan might want to visit all the football stadiums in the country and tick them off as they go. I could use a spreadsheet but is there something a bit more structured?

  • We've accumulated over the years, like most I guess, a small pile of mobile phones.
Do I just sell them as a bundle on eBay?
Is there a more lucrative way to get the most dollahs out of them?

  • Details? My wife has broken 2 in the last 6 months ...

  • Android devices.
Lo to mid-range most of them. Nothing too advanced.
The best one I had (till my current one) was the Samsung S9. Battery slowly giving up the ghost after 2 years.

  • Ta. Annoyingly can't find it in the FAQs. Barclays debit definitely do so likely they do too...

It'll be buried in the Ts&Cs and depend on which particular variety of Barclaycard you've got.

I've just changed mine from Platinum to Rewards because the newer one doesn't have foreign transaction fees.

(So to answer your original question badly, if you've got a Barclaycard Platinum, it'll charge you a fee. If you've got a Barclaycard Rewards, it won't. If you've got some other breed, it might.)

  • Thanks yes I have platinum. Going away tomorrow though so too late to change it. But good to know.

  • When did "carnival" become a thing? I'm fairly sure how its referred to has changed since last year

  • Is it just me that thinks it’s funny Notting Hill was on telly last night? Just me then.

  • Apparently there was a celebration of the Windrush Generation this year as well

  • Do I need to lock my bike up on the train? I never have before, but I’ve never taken a bike worth locking up. Leeds to kings x

  • My only real references are to the guardian and 6 music.

6 music is celebrating carnival. Not Notting Hill Carnival, or carnivals plural, but singular.

Same too with references in the guardian.

  • Might as well, to reduce the chance of someone making off with it, unless you don't want to carry a big lock around at the other end. In which case, zip tie it to itself/anything and then cut/bin zip ties when you get off. Or maybe one of those lightweight Hiplok Z or similar that I've been meaning to get for ages, for lightweight locking purposes.

  • I do, you'll be carrying a lock anyway, put it to use rather than let it sit in the bag.

  • It has been called 'carnival' for years, maybe the mainstream media have only just started using it.

  • What's the best video editor* in 2023 (for someone with some experience of video editors, but who's not a professional creator/designer)?
I need something that costs less than £100 and is easy to use and learn, for fairly basic enterprise use. We're not talking UHD super-slow-mo stuff here.

    *for Windows

Resolve has a free version which does 90% of the things you need or a paid studio version if you need additional more complex graphics related things and want to upgrade. But sounds like the free version will be more than sufficient.

Blackmagic offer good tutorials on their youtube page but it's a pretty easy bit of software to work with. It works on a 'page' system, with one page for each aspect: imports, cutting, fine editing, colour, sound, graphics, exports.

Depending on your previous experience you may find the cut page more familiar or the edit page as the place you'll spend most of your time.

Scroll near the bottom of that page to where it starts listing the related products, look for 'Free Download Now'. Then on the pop up select Resolve 18.5, Windows (left hand side) rather than 18.6 Studio, Windows (right hand side). Register. Done.
