2 deaths during swim this morning, based on clips I saw they probably shouldn’t have run the swim

  • Fuck, that's tragic.

  • Disgraceful.

To postpone the Saturday then have this on the Sunday is beyond a tragedy it’s 100% putting profit over safety. This should be a police matter investigating the organisers.

  • Totally, they had two races worth of swimmers out on the swim course with presumably the same number of safety boats. Dangerous for participants and unfair on volunteers to be in that situation.

The full race was always scheduled to start at 7am but a communication was sent via email last night to say the postponed 70.3 would start at 6:30am. I saw on Instagram that this eventually set off closer to 7.30am, with most people shivering and some in emergency blankets at that stage. At this stage they’d moved the swim course further into the bay and halved the full distance course.

When they saw the 70.3 swimmers were struggling to even get to the 1st buoy they shortened the full distance swim even more.

    Totally profit over safety.

    When they

  • Eurgh. Someone should be held to account for that, but I won't hold my breath.

    RIP

  • The video I saw looks insane, I wouldn’t surf in that sea never mind start a tri in it

  • Yeh official statement published this afternoon: https://www.triathlonireland.com/news/triathlon-ireland-statement/

    Doesn’t look good for IM.

  • To be fair to Ironman they merely franchise races out so have zero* input into race day this is solely on the people running the operation in Ireland.

Personally I need to arrests here this is gross and the videos make for harrowing viewing.

  • To be fair to Ironman they merely franchise races out so have zero* input into race day this is solely on the people running the operation in Ireland.

It comes down to whether theres proof that IM was/wasnt aware of Triathlon Ireland's decision on the day. If they were aware, they also have (at least moral) responsibility. Obviously this is just my opinion, not a legal fact.

  • Rumours circulating now that TI didn’t openly not sanction the event til AFTER the swim. This has the makings of an episode of father ted.

  • Jesus.

In other news I had a coached endless pool session this morning. I’m a wrecked human now.

  • What do people do for tracking on a triathlon? I have a Fenix 7 which I will use to record the race, I also have an Edge 530 which I'd like to use on the bike. I could either use it as an extended display, or just start a bike ride on the edge once I get on the bike and then delete it later. I can't decide which would be more reliable and/or useful.

  • I track the whole thing on a watch, then just use a garmin 530 for data on the bike.

  • The thing that appeals about extended display is I can set it up before the race so I only have to remember the lap button on my watch rather than starting the Edge as well. I'm not planning to use a separate HR monitor and I don't think the watch will broadcast HR to Edge if I just use the edge to record it's own activity.

  • I track the whole thing on a 920xt, and use edge 520 on the bike. You dont really have to remember to start your edge. At any point after you started your bike ride and you look down to see that its off, well, just turn it on. All your power & HR data will already be recorded on your fenix anyway.

  • I guess I'm overthinking it, just wanted to check I wasn't missing anything obvious.
Have my first tri coming up this weekend, Olympic distance. Fell pretty prepared for the first two events, running is quite new to me and I have never really got on with it. Did my longest run ever at 7.5km last week, so hoping that my legs hold out for another 15minutes or so on race day. Weather isn't looking ideal, it's been 35degrees for the past week or so, dropping to 12deg and rain on Sunday morning. It's going to be a lot warmer in the water than out of it!

  • Deffo over thinking it… your watch will have all the data you need for geeking out afterwards and your bike computer is just for keeping an eye on the variables you can control power/hr and time so you remember to eat…

  • For any Olympic or sprint I’ve ever done I just use my watch with extended display and ride to HR, however I had planned to use my edge alongside my watch with map and power for 70.3 which ironically never happened.

For sprint distance I don’t think I ever look at my watch for pacing, it’s full gas from the whistle!

  • I don't know if it's of interest to anyone here, but I modelled and 3D printed some SRAM wireless blips for my extensions. I made mine for 35degress, but it can be easily adjusted in CAD to whatever angle you need. If anyone wants the file I'd be happy to share. I had mine printed in MJF PA12, cAn't guarantee they'd work on a filament printer as they are snap fit and the walls are quite thin.

  • The blip holders look great, would love to see a final pic of it fitted!

Anyone interested in a set of these Profile Design aero drink systems? Bracket, 650ml bottle (new in packaging), 900ml bottle (used twice). £25 for forum members. Doesnt work it high-angled aerobars, hence we're parting ways.

  • Here they are on the bars. A very similar thing is available from Leap components commercially, and at quite a reasonable price too.

  • The weather for tomorrow is really looking quite grim. I guess they might cancel or postpone if the thunderstorm overlaps with the start (8:30).

  • Success! 2:43:22 finishing time. Mass start swim on a shallow rocky beach was hectic and never really felt like I found my rhythm. The first buoy was only aboit 300m from shore so not really enough time for the field to thin out. Was also definitely in the minority not wearing a wetsuit in the 23degree water. But 28:26 (1:52/100m) was about what I was hoping for.
It had stopped raining by the time I was on the bike. Pushed a decent pace but was surprised at how many people were really nervous on the descents, definitely where I made up the most places. 1:14:01 (32kph)
Run felt surprisingly good, no stomach issues and ran a faster pace than I had planned. Was still veeeery slow (5:31/km) but didn’t want to blow and I’ve never run 10km before!
10/10 would do again (in the dry)

  • And here I was worried about my very much functional bento box & battery holder

Oh and @chiroshi those indeed look very neat printed out on the bike!
