A lot of the system boilers I see are much older than the combi installations. I see quite a few faults that are internal with combi but external in system boilers so the repairs can be carried out more easily and the parts are more standard and seem to fail less because they're not squeezed into a hot box. By this I mean diverters, expansions tanks etc.

Just make sure the pipe run for the hot water isn’t the longest that could possibly be achieved just so your installer gets an easy life.
Unventeds can be in the centre of the home so you get equally short runs to pretty much every tap and no delay in the delivery of sweet piping hot water.

no delay
Go full golf club and have circulating hot water.

Plus an extra few hundred for steel calcs (online rather than engineer) and building control

I put in a 50kW combi which could have run out house and our neighbours on each side, purely for the litres/min flow rate. Wildly over the top from a “how many radiators” calculation.
One person can now have a fantastic high pressure shower for ever, or one person can have a decent shower and another can run the bath no problem.

That’s what I’m talking about.
Which boiler do you have?
-
• #7760
System boilers have expansion vessels on them, they are combis without a water block.

Is it not normally external?

We've just had a 2 meter knock through and steel put in. We're paying the guys under 2k for the steel, skip and the work but had an engineer do drawings first which was a couple of hundred, building notice is a couple of hundred, getting them to board and plaster around the new opening etc so probably pushing 3k at the end. This is in Manchester.

We're just about to start on a kitchen refurb, which starts with us knocking the wall between our kitchen and dining rooms down, to create a single big space.
That'll lose us our kitchen cupboard storage, unfortunately. However, we do have some alcoves beside the fireplace in the dining room. I'm hoping there's some way I can put shelving in there and cover it all with a door or two.
Do I need to buy fitted standalone cupboards or is there something where we can attach a door straight to the wall? Apols if this is a dim question, I'm quite new to all this refurb stuff (just moved out of a flat).

Yeah they are normally inside unless the system is bigger and needs an extra one too

Ikea PAX wardobes come in widths of 50 cm, 75 cm or 100 cm and the depth is either 35 cm or 58 cm so you might be able to fit 35x100cm on either side of a chimney breast.
I put 100x58 x 236 on either side of mine and it's super useful storage.

Thank you, very helpful!

That's really helpful, thanks so much!

Have something similar in our utility room.
Had some strips of mdf attached vertically up the wall so straighten space, cupboard doors attached to them. -
• #7769
You could just bolt a 3x2 to the wall and mount hinged doors to that. Depends on the level of finish you want

Ahh, most of the ones I see have an external one. I've not seen inside many of them though. Pretty sure the one at home doesn't have an expansion tank in it but it's 20+ years old.

So it seems we're ready for some bench top templates and some matching back splash wall upstand to be made.
Still plenty of finishing stuff to be done (cupboard door adjustment, architrave round door, painting to be finished, underfloor heating to be commissioned etc) but one step closer etc etc. After 6 weeks, I'm glad to have an operable oven but just realised I'll be making the coffee outside again as I don't have an induction plate for the moka pot. Oven cable was an absolute beast. 10mm flex. Huge

Looks very good!
I will refrain from commenting on the spots not being equidistant to the cupboards..;)
What's the big hole in the ceiling for? -
• #7773
Yes, that upsets my OCD everytjme I go I there. Think it's to do with how the joists run but can't tell if I was being told porkies. There are white bezels for the lights still to go on. Large hole is for a large single stereo speaker. It's a big thing with a diameter of 280mm wired back to a network streamer under the stairs. Probably much simpler ways of getting music in the kitchen.

Second furthest unit on the left.

Placement isn’t an issue for us, as the whole back of the house is getting ripped out and re-vajazzled.
Just trying to work out why so many people swear by system boilers, when to my lay mind a suitably-sized combi would just give us unlimited hot water on demand without any tanks or timers…
