  • Really interesting and inspirational thread, makes me want to start training for the next one!

Out of interest, I noticed that one of the posts talks about club support vehicles. Is this something that is seen as acceptable/fitting ion with the spirit of things?

I don't purport to speak for everyone, but at least amongst the people I rode with the general feeling is that support vehicles are not kosher. Self-supported suffering is the name of the game. The ones that irk me the most are the cycling clubs with massive vans carrying provisions for all their riders.

The above notwithstanding I did see a very heartwarming moment when a fella (mid 60s I would say) was being comforted and encouraged by his wife at a control in the wee hours. She gave him a kiss on the forehead, clipped his helmet on, waved him off and shouted the obligatory 'bon courage!'

  • It's not the way I do things, but many riders are supported and there are official arrangements in place for it.

  • Well done.

If I was going to do it again (I'm not), I'd do it fixed. Reading your ride report makes it even less likely I'd attempt it.

  • That was the most absurd thing I’ve ever done.

The people at the side of the road supporting, cheering, and handing out water and food. The continuous stream of cyclists at all times. The sleep deprivation and hallucinations. Meeting random people at 3am in the morning who you end up chatting with for hours. Being called a bitch for overtaking someone on a climb. The gradual slide into animalistic behaviour as the ride went on; people farting freely, others conspicuously applying a generous spread of chamois cream to their gooch. Meeting people in person from ‘on here.’ Sleeping wherever the hell you want; canteen floors, grass verges, people’s porches.

Well done to everyone who took part.

    Never again fixed.

  • Which reminds me how brilliant that Rapha already did gilets in 2015.
