Quick Google suggests it's not necessary to update land registry for changes which do not affect the boundaries of the property (as opposed to the dwelling) for freehold places.
Yeah that was my impression. Bit of a red herring as the real point is expect the unexpected when it comes to conveyancing (and try and set something aside for these sort of unanticipated costs)!
