Hello folks, here are more bike things.
While all of you are distracted by the forum collab of the century ( @Hulsroy x @Maj x @Tijmen ) I sneaked in the back and grabbed the leftovers. @Maj, bless her, made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a frameset I always wanted to own ride.
So a few weeks back when I was in London for work I brought my big backpack, picked up the Surly 1x1 frame set + Wheels, packed it up neatly, flew to Germany and lied to customs about it.
The 1x1 was supposed to replace the Brexit Wombat at my parents so there are some bits I moved over but there are also some new bits and ideas in the mix.
The Brexit Wombat is a lot of fun but chain tension was always a fiddly issue. Especially when I was trying to switch between two different ratios, one for off-road riding in the forest and one for getting around town. It doesn't have horizontal dropouts and the derailleur hanger is bent in a way where the chain tensioner only works with very specific chainlines.
The 1x1 with the horizontal dropouts pretty much solves that issue.
I also couldn't resist and got one of those neat Sugino White Industries cranksets which suits the bike really well. This is also where the magic happens. I am running two chainrings in the front. The calculated perfect chainline is exactly between both chainrings.
I got myself a sweet dingle speed setup that is working extremely well and thanks to the surly chaintug doesn't require a lot of work to switch between the gears. Still, most probably nothing I would do while on the go but it's easy and fast do when I know I'll be riding distance versus off-road shenanigans.
I know every bike is a good bike, but this 1x1 can manage to keep the same vibe of the previous one and be miles better at the same time. I wish I'd need something like that!
