Please recommend a decent crankset for my fixie

Posted on
  • Well I thought it is about time I built my Pearson fixie up again.

I don't have the old crankset and I don't know much about crank brands who make square taper cranksets.

So, can anyone recommend a decent crankset to go for pkease? I don't want to spend a fortune but I don't want garbage, so looking for opinions from this parish please.

The BB shell is modern i presume because the frame is only about 10 years old, so a British 68mm I guess.

    Thank you peeps.

  • Sturmey do a cheap one don't they? Sugino if you want to spend more.

  • Sturmey do a 'track' crankset but iirc it's 130bcd and don't come shorter than 170mm so not what everyone is looking for for their fixie.

If you must stick with square taper then I quite like Stronglight Track 2000. They're going to be north of £100 new nowadays but show up second hand fairly regularly.

Just make sure to avoid Miche!

Personally I'm not too fussed about 5mm length or the bcd so rather than the Sturmey cranks I like using Hollowtech road cranks. You can get older 105s or even Ultegras in 170mm/130bcd for pretty cheap and they'll be a lot more solid than cheap square taper stuff.

  • Spa cycles

  • Thanks everyone.

Truth be told, I would much rather use a Shimano external BB than square taper but aren't all their chainsets that strange asymmetric bolt patterm?

  • New ones yeah, maybe they’re some non groupset stuff on symmetrical 110 or 130 bcd 5 arm patterns, I dunno. Alfine are 130bcd 5 arm, can probably still buy them new?

Otherwise, older stuff from eBay. I’ve bought loads of ht2 cranks off eBay and they’re never fucked.

  • Alfine is a good shout, good chainline and they're easy to find cheap, new or second-hand.

  • I used to like the sturmey archer crank was 25 and available in black or silver. Was a knock off miche look alike that felt better.

Square taper BB is the best true facts. ;)

  • Hey Lolo long time, looked at the alfine for a bike and was over 100 with the external bearing BB.

Is it cheaper in the EU?

  • I went with SA in the end. It seems fine 🙂

    Thanks for opinions and recommendations.

  • Edit: Lol too late.

Modern, stiffer, lighter option: As mentioned, find older 5 bolt hollowtech II crankset for cheaps with no rings / worn rings (but obviously get standard 130 BCD not 110 BCD compact).

More beautiful, heavier option: Get a 8/9/10 speed Campagnolo square taper crankset, think Athena, Daytona, Chorus. It will be 5 bolt 135BCD. The BB sourcing will be a puzzle because of ISO (Campagnolo) and JIS (Shimano) tapers, but the variety of available BB lengths helps you tune the chainline and this is an advantage over hollowtech II.

Campagnolo Ultra Torque is a tempting alternative (if more $$$) but will be a pain in the ass because of non-standard chainrings and the need to fashion spacers for the bolts. It has been done though.

  • It's been a while. cnc-bike.de starts at €90, it's a bit more with the BB.

  • good chainline

What exactly do you mean by this? I thought it was adjusted per bike/wheel/frame etc?
