I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about but why can't shoes sizes be measured in cm foot length and width?
Something like:
28-30cm long
8-10cm wideSeems mental that we'd have daft systems for measuring the shoe when we could just measure the thing you put in them and give a range of acceptable fit.

Shoe width is more about volume since the uppers are flexible, so it's generally measured as the circumference of the foot rather than width. Still problems with the sole width, so it's a little more complicated.
Totally agree though — clothes sizing too, if you measure the waistband of your jeans it'll be much, much larger than the waist measurement on the tag.

Are barleycorns not standard enough for you?!

Like clothes, different parts of the shoe are different sizes depending on the model, shape, style, etc. so even with those basic measurements... you're still fucked. The size is still just a starting point to fit and at least tends to be more consistent within a brand (until they change their entire design)

We bought a Clarks junior foot measuring gauge thing (because who knew that kids can have such a visceral reaction to having their feet measured), and it had some completely random scale* that then had to be looked up on a conversion chart to get UK shoe size.
* It measures in cm and mm. BUT IT DOESN'T START AT ZERO.
This happened to me with socks.
No indication that they were children's socks... just a size range UK 9-11.
Wish they'd just size everything in EU sizes as the problem is that UK and US sizes reach 14 and reset to 1 🤷
At least with EU sizes the number continues to go up as the feet get bigger.
