The surface of the case for my 5th Generation Paperwhite is disintegrating and needs replacing. I'm struggling to find it or a replacement I like. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Imo the amazon ones are a bit heavy and don't have great hand feel. Slip ones don't protect and are too small in the hand. What I like about my one is that it's light, comfortable and strikes the right balance of size.

I've never bothered with a case. They are pretty tough and I've generally just thrown them in my bag and they are fine.

I don't really like not having a case as it feels a bit too thin for me.

This is my current one.

As it's all fabric it's nice and light and the slightly larger surround helps protect it from knocks. And the magnetic flap works well.
