Did you consider knocking through to the next room to open the space up a bit?
Friends of ours have just redone a galley kitchen like this that leads through to a downstairs bathroom.
It was an expensive refurb and I thought they were crazy not to change the layout or extend into the side return but it's made a huge improvement as it is.
