  • Freddie showed me this thread over the weekend, so I thought I'd join up and fill in some questions about my Sworks SL6 winter project.

It was a Pink SL6, but after a crash I had it repaired and repainted in Sand (RAL1002)
I then painted the guards myself and went about working out how to make them fit.

NDS The thru axles are tapped M4 inside of the 6mm allen key.
DS I used a plug, glued in. Then tapped that.
That gave good strength, a bit if a faff to get the wheels off. But 28mm GP5000STRs with Stans race sealant got me through 10hr weeks all winter without having to take a wheel off (1 dynaplug)

The other mounts were more tricky... And it's still a slight work in progress.

At the steerer, I have ended up with an elastic hair tie around the fork crown race holding onto a flared plastic but on the fender.
Its rock solid, keeps me really dry but does have some toeverlap

The rear is a bit more tricky.
It goes all the way around and through the chain stays and pokes out thr under side. It's then zip tied across to the plastic frame plug to hold it tight.
And I then used the front brake mount from the Bluemels set on the seat stay to have a 4 point if attachment so it's not wobbling around.

It was a stupid project, but worked out really well. I bloody love riding it. Get lots of head turns ans I'm sure of lot of people thinking it's fake.

Happy to answer any questions. And youll likely see my out on it around SW London and Windsor during the winter.

    Grant

  • this is totally awesome.

can you say more about the plug/tap in the axles? and maybe a shot of both the brake bridge and chainstay attachments?

  • Too late for this project but saw this in the recent bikepacking.com friday debrief and it may well be helpful to some here looking to do something similar and add guards to a bike without mounts. Curve Relaxle through axels (half way through the link) are TA with a bunch of add ins including having the ends tapped for an M5 bolt allowing racks and guards to be mounted.
