Aye. Tbf, this is the first time it's ever been a bit noisy. Previous to that, the clicking has either been bearings, headset cup, chain guide, fork, shock, stem bolt, or seatpost. So really it's just the crank having it's day in the sun

They do tend to creak and have friends dump them and went back to Shimano.

Dunno exactly what it is but I suspect it's the cross slots cut into the axle.

I think you're almost certainly right. The fact they're not on the new axles is telling
