  • There's another tape to choose from, from Caden the wheelbuilder. It's been around for a few years, but Caden is an Australian company, hardly known in the UK. Run by triathlete Ben Caden. He's a big believer in tubs and tape. Says it's not true that tape has a higher RR than glue. (Some say this negates the speed advantage of tubs vs clinchers.)

The tape is made by 3M. Ben got it through a friend there. He says it peels off easily if you leave your wheels in the sun. (I hope this doesn't indicate the obvious drawback.) He's done a vid recommending tape rather than glue. https://youtu.be/vV1X4fWsCfk
He says glue is wonky and bumpy. Transcript here https://carbonbikewheels.com.au/eu/tubular-rim-tape-or-glue

Tape can be bought with free postage worldwide. 12m for 35 euros. Effetto is many times more expensive. Widths are 24 or 20mm. The 20 is out of stock.

Tape and wheels have happy reviews at weightweenies.

  • I bought a pair of wheels a couple of years ago from this guy, and they're magnificent. 49mm rims weighing 330g, with extremely impressive braking on the carbon brake track, complete wheelset weighing 1080g. CX-Rays laced to some impressively minimalist forged straight-pull hubs, with the nicest flange spacing I've ever seen. Extremely competitive price given the spec.

I'm surprised Caden hasn't 'blown up' by now, given the bang for buck .

Wish I'd caught that leave the wheels in the sun tip - had a hell of a time trying to get the backing off the tape; it kept tearing. Tyres haven't budged since though.
