  • Yeah I was thinking moving up to 54 as I know there's also an official option for that! I just thought I might be missing something with people sizing down to 44, as I feel like the bottom 3 gears are so spinny with the 50t, I was surprised sizing down was the done thing. Surely the duo chainring is a bit unnecessary considering there's no front derailleur ? Thanks for the link at any rate I'll check out other options!

  • I use 54 all the time, nice to have decent top speed & most of the time I'm on the flat. I did the 5 spd mod on my p line and now have 21t at the back - can get up most hills still...

  • I'm pretty fresh to the brompton scene if I'm honest, so I'm not familiar with all the mods! I'm assuming the second hand one I grabbed is using the 2 x stock cogs on the rear, so yeah thinking the 54t is the shout for a bigger top end. Do you use the one you linked above or are you rolling with an official Brompton one? Cheers!

  • Probably been rattling around for ages, when did you last check it or service it?

  • Lots of people go down cos they are past the stage of smashing it everywhere, going up to 58/60 is easy fun.

  • Easy to build, but the SA 5s are dogshit and supplier warranty is even worse

  • It's an electric so that's probably why going down seems silly for me. Anyone got any reccos on alternative 54t 130bdc rings? Ta!

  • I'm using a single 54t chainring, I like the look of the double chainring, nice and simple. I don't need it where I live...

  • I have a 54t in stock in black, fittings for the OE guard too, higher quality than factory ones

  • Fuckin hell! Only just got mine and it's already creaking like mad. Seems like more the front than back end but certainly doesn't fill me with confidence.

  • Ok cool, I'm gonna have a think about gearing. I think the electric front wheel is just lulling me into a false sense that the gearing is easy wheras I'm just getting carried by a battery!

  • Also, apologies if this has been addressed in this thread multiple times but I couldn't find definitive results; are people down with eazy wheels? Or other alternatives? The stock ones are so bad and I'd like something with a smooth action. I've read about people using inline wheels but that its fiddly and you can get heel strike. Anyone have a killer recommendation for an alternative? Cheers

  • After trying some cheap copies and some roller wheels, I reckon the easy wheels are definitely not cheap, but the only ones where you pay and don't look back

  • I’ve got some Joseph Kousac ones for SJS and wouldn’t go back to anything else. Larger diameter, proper bearings. Make rolling the bike in stations and supermarkets a dream. The SON ones also get good reviews and are very similar, also available from SJS or @sbbohr at bromptonman.com. Not cheap, but oh so worth it.

  • yeah that & two easy wheels - not as stable as a rack but rolls pretty nicely now.

    bafflingly, I also had to turn the handlebar catch upside down to stop spokes from catching on the hub gear indicator chain, but that's easy (once you discover that you need to do it!)

  • Off for a 10 days tour, starting from Paris and going up to the Netherlands and Belgium

  • Bags attached to saddles rather than to the rack? Is this to allow for quick folds? I was never super happy when I had a Carradice on the saddle.

    Sounds like a great trip, love cycling through Belgium and the Netherlands

  • How bizarre, we were on the same train! I was the guy staring incessantly at your bikes on the platform at Turin. Some nice mods on there 👌
