And every sat nav going pings you to let you know ones coming up anyway, but I still constantly see people getting "the flash" for speeding and/or jumping a red light by one on Lewisham Way. You have to be properly stupid to get caught by one.

Don't forget that Welsh scheme will be twice as expensive to deliver because they'll have to install 20 signs in Welsh too.

I make a special effort to drive no more than 19
Tbf I do that on the 30mph road I live on. It's a maximum speed, not a minimum required speed.

• #15255
That's how I failed my first test

Also, allowing speed cameras to be put in big yellow boxes is the stupidest, most craven sop to the car lobby imaginable.
The cameras are there to slow the cars down, not to collect monies. If they're visible, people slow down, and they serve their purpose, no?
-
• #15257
Not really, if people are only slowing down in the immediate vicinity of the camera.
The threat of not seeing and being caught by a more discrete camera should have greater effect.
-
• #15258
But they speed until just before, slam the brakes on and then speed after.
-
• #15259
That took me way too long.

Iechyd da!
-
• #15261
how do you get a 20 zone put in on the road where you live?
-
• #15262
The problem with average speed cameras is their effectiveness in urban areas with a high density of roads, and complexity of vehicle paths between them, is limited.
Far better in my view is a quantity of movable camera that can be relocated in one of many locations. In situ you can’t tell if the camera is present or not.
The current system of fixed and visible cameras is ridiculous and self-defeating. -

Last night I (on a motorbike) moved out of the way of a rapidly approaching car in a 50mph A127.
they sailed past me, slammed on the brakes for an average camera, then speed up again, presumably to repeat the process at the next average camera.
Hard concept, averages. -

When the first ceasefire happened in NI, all of a sudden the cops had no terrorists to catch/collaborate with, and they sent them all out on traffic duty. Unmarked cars/bikes, mobility, speedguns.
Within a week our house of 3 drivers had 3 speeding tickets, and everyone started driving more slowly and carefully, because we knew the speed traps were a) out there b) effective and c) not signposted by a huge fucking yellow box and 10 yards of white lines marking the only bit where you had to actually slow down.

Hard concept, averages.Lol, rinse and repeat for the LEZ and ULEZ cameras on the A316. People are fucking thick.

How do you get it enforced, more importantly.

Enough of the locals (including me) drive at <20mph in our local 20mph area that it works most of the time.
In general, around here (Wandsworth borough) it works like this:
- Council puts up 20mph signs with no active traffic calming (just passive/fake stuff painted on the road)
- Council put in speed logging thingies across the road (the pneumatic things)
- If the average speed on the road is beyond a threshold (28mph?) they put in active traffic calming (speed humps, speed cushions, etc)
- People really slowly begin to start to get an inkling of the message being presented
- Council puts up 20mph signs with no active traffic calming (just passive/fake stuff painted on the road)

By passive/fake stuff I mean just paint on the road that makes it look like a speed bump/cushion, but it's just paint: https://goo.gl/maps/tdzZ5Sm1XZZhwQxt5
That was Aug 2020 Streetview, of course, people continued to drive too fast down that road so they put in a proper sinusoidal speedbump by Jun 2021: https://goo.gl/maps/GCv7ZPLDaKxkY3xS6 (the fake ones are still there behind the camera).

Genuinely wonder if reducing the the speed limit will increase the average speed.
So many slow down for the cameras in London then accelerate to brake for the next lights. So much for smooth driving.

If only cars could be reprogrammed so rather than show MPG they showed £ per mile - updating with the latest average fuel price data, or somehow recording it from the garage you last filled up in.
If people could better make the connection that razzing up to red lights and then screeching off again costs you noticeable money, they rein it in a bit. Wishful thinking maybe though. Taxi drivers are some of the worst and you'd think they would have clocked that driving efficiently would materially impact their take home pay!

Would probably just end up with fuel prices going down once everyone realised the cost.

EVs are giving many drivers their first taste of supercar/motorbike acceleration. Teslas are doing 0-60 in under 2 seconds. People do this in town because it's fun and gets attention.

I don't even know what a gallon is

8 pints.
Does anyone know of anyone who has ever actually got a ticket or any other action from an average speed zone? I've never heard of it happening and basically don't believe they are used.
