Seems like it was caused by a system update that can be fixed by flashing the BIOS with a (new?) version ... tread carefully, you don't want to brick it.
Is hers also showing as 3 GB rather than 6 GB of RAM?

Just put a new desktop PC in the garden office, sat next to my work laptop.
Work laptop is getting 65-100 Mbps over the mesh wifi, the new desktop is getting broken connection and at peak, 10mbps? Brand new pci wifi network card with the latest drivers?

Is the antenna screwed in?
-
• #8907
you know, I've wondered similar. at my folks place, my mbp gets 200+, desktop gets 40.

• #8908
yes, x2 screwed in.

Check signal strength when you move them. Check that it's not on a different wifi channel getting interference and I presume you've updated any drivers already and there's not a tonne of errors being logged somewhere. Are they both using the same DNS provider? You're not running one on a VPN or something? Are the cards both supporting the 801.blah.blah needed for whatever speed you expect.

Thanks, you've nailed it! Thank you so much! 0/10 for me not finding this in the Chuwi forum. This machine has the boot msg in Chinese and the 3GB RAM error, so I'm going to risk the download here https://forum.chuwi.com/t/chuwi-bios-firmware-hi10-x-n4120/39942/52?u=nickh Fingers crossed. I hope the BIOS flashing procedure is simple enough for me.
Edit: or I could leave it and hope the fix is included in a firmware upgrade in Windows Update some day? Flashing the BIOS looks hair-raising. Or is it just a simple matter of a few steps with a memory card in a USB slot?

Usb WiFi and extension cable might work better. If it's positioned wrong you've got a big metal box full of electrics in the way of the signal.
For the price, if positions work out, I'd be tempted by something from here

Seems like it's a developing situation, maybe give it a couple of days and see if more user reports come through...
-
• #8913
So, it's the PCI card that's faulty. Tried with a usb wifi dongle and get speeds matching what i get with the laptop.

Would you usually expect the manufacturer to resolve this with a firmware update in Windows Update?
-
• #8915
Maybe a big manufacturer but probably not with this one

If anyone’s looking for an excuse, this is £400 less than normal

Really want a 21:9 ultrawide but no closer to knowing which one. That LG is enormous. I think 34 inches would be my sweet spot.
Would like at least 140hz (going from 240hz might suck but presuming a 3090 can't drive 240hz at 21:9 resolutions). 1440p would be fine.
Looking at that oled Alienware everyone raves about but paranoid about burn in which would be inevitable as I'd be using it for work 10 hours a day and gaming for a fraction of that. So IPS/other seems more sensible.
The Corsair xenon looks interesting but 45 inches!

Do you think you'd notice it much? I'll be honest, and say that I don't.
Then again, I think I have maybe one thing that can run at 240, and that tends to make everything crap out on reboot, and I have to reset everything to 60 and reconfigure.
-
• #8919
I currently have two 27" 4k monitors. one landscape, one portrait, so I don't think the ultrawide will end up feeling larger, but will hopefully be more useable
Edit - coo, it's dropped another £100 since I ordered this morning, so it's about £500 cheaper than elsewhere. 5mins on phone to eBuyer and they refunded the difference...

I have a spare old but just about functional MacBook if of interest? Needs a new charger…

Is it worth upgrading to Windows 11?
I've got 10 Pro at the moment and Microsoft keeps finding ways to hassle me about it.
I normally upgrade to the latest versions by default, but read mixed things last time I googled it.
-
• #8922
Yeah, it’s absolutely fine
Boring upgrade tbh, everything works about the same as W10, nothing particularly better or worse -
• #8923
Thanks for asking this.
I've also got bored of the constant reminders. -

Downloaded and installed w11.
Laptop started up,
and,
the taskbar is on the bottom of the screen.
No problem, I'll just click and hold and drag it back to the top.
Oh, no you won't.Have tried the registry edit hack, but the taskbar is still on the bottom of the screen. I'll have a second go tomorrow morning.

My biggest gripe with 11 is that they removed the option to not combine apps in the taskbar. Baffling regression and a proper pain in the tits.
I've been relying on the third-party 'explorer patcher' to restore this, which does the job but has its own quirks. It's apparently been fixed properly in the windows beta/insider thing, so will hopefully find its way into the main branch sooner rather than later.
I agree but I'm not rich enough. She's elderly and not rich either. She needs her speakers for video calls for all her community volunteering. Please somebody just bung her a few quid. I've fixed so many problems like this over the years. Fucking nightmare. I was forced to learn this crap in the IBM DOS era. I've never been defeated before. Why did she have to buy the cheapest Chinese tablet from a home shopping catalogue company? It doesn't even have UK keys. The manual is 1 page.
