you know, I've wondered similar. at my folks place, my mbp gets 200+, desktop gets 40.

Usb WiFi and extension cable might work better. If it's positioned wrong you've got a big metal box full of electrics in the way of the signal.
For the price, if positions work out, I'd be tempted by something from here

Just put a new desktop PC in the garden office, sat next to my work laptop.
Work laptop is getting 65-100 Mbps over the mesh wifi, the new desktop is getting broken connection and at peak, 10mbps? Brand new pci wifi network card with the latest drivers?
