Mudguards

  • I’m now a slut for aesthetics and the Honjos are expensive. And I think the angled profile of the PDWs will look better anyway I reckon.
I like the profile of the SKS Edge AL but they looks like they’ll be a pain to fit with that shape.

  • Anyone fitted 45mm PDW fenders before?
How realistic are the numbers on the fitting guide below? A and C are more like 8mm on my bike.

  • Suggestions for securing the bottom of the rear mudguard when there's no bridge between the stays?

  • Has anyone used the Ass Saver Win Wing? Looking into getting something for the wetter days that I can put on and take off without faff.

  • Nice, thanks. Shame mine has a stupid Columbus tube size, electrical tape packer ftw i guess.

  • What about a couple of zip ties.

I also think you could experiment with a kind of expanding wedge so stuffing a cork or rubber thing in there and putting a screw through it with a nut and washer, as it expands it might press up against the stays. Sort of how a bar end fits in .. might not work tho

  • Zipties going the full way round both chainstays forming a loop, then ziptie the slot in the mudguard to the bottom of the loop

  • PDW say to put two cable ties through the hole and round each stay.

  • And for those wondering, the PDW fenders did fit with a bit of minor fettling.

  • Looks good, quality mud guards really suit a classic frame

  • Nice. Just did the same with my Steamroller, went on pretty easily but the overlap with 35's isn't fun so thinking of hacking them onto bike above.

Good quality but can't say i'm loving the flat profile of the 45's. 37's have a much nicer form IMO.

  • Aesthetically I think there are nicer looking ones out there, but they’re minimal enough that it’s a minor con on a long list of pros. The bike is nice, but it’s not a headturner looks wise (dat stack), I can live with only semi beautiful guards. The fact that they work well and were easy to install in the main thing.

  • Anyone want some used but functional VO hammered 700x45 mudguards with Raw flaps, black for like 30 quid?

  • are the flaps black? or the guards?

  • Yes please! Will DM now. Happy for Spotter or anyone else who has beaten me to the punch to take them though.

  • Both. The flaps are the stealth reflective variety, no logo.

  • Not caught up with this thread in a while so apologies if it’s already been mentioned - anyone used these? Are they any good? https://www.bicyclequickguard.co.uk/

I’m about to pull the trigger on my first disc road bike and looking for mudguard options - it’s either the above or get the thru axles threaded and zip tie/Velcro some SKS as below -

  • That quick guard certainly looks like a quicker and easier solution than mine
But also quite bulky and not full coverage

Mine is on thr tight side, not a lot of clearance.

  • Ahh thanks for your reply and superb work with your bike 👌 do you know what the largest tyre you can run is and what size the guards are? Looking at getting an Aethos so I assume the clearance might be similar. How easy is it to change a flat out on the road?

  • I these mudguards are sks bluemels 35mm
    I have 28mm tubeless GP5000s

They're the biggest tyres I can fit for sure
And tubeless saves me from road side tyre changes.
But the thru axle mounts of the mudguards have to be removed before the axle can come, out.
Once a wheel is out, the bike has to be held up or flipped over

  • Awesome, thank you - did you tap the threads in the axles yourself or get a shop to do it?

  • Myself.
Because the drive side is plugged and bonded before I tapped it.

  • Question for you narrow tyre and mudguard people: I have an unremarkable but totally fine early 2000's road bike, and it seems to have sufficient clearance for 23s and full guards. Are PDW the preferred choice for this sort of application? I have them in a larger size and like them enough. I've also used SKS, Planet Bike, Bontrager, etc. Never used classic rolled guards like Honjo and the like.

What would you pick for a bike with some-but-not-lots of clearance and narrow tires?

Bike image for reference. It's a size or two small, but workable until the right frameset enters my life.

  • I can’t make my mind up? Obviously they need fitting properly, but not sure if I should or not.
