The process I had decided on meant I needed square pieces to begin with. Next time I'll get the parts laser cut so I just need to do the assembly.
Leftovers get used for other projects or when they are too small or akward to handle they go in the metal recycling bin and then back to the foundry eventually. 80% of steel is recycled

What happens to the scrap? Could you have brazed onto one block and then cut in half?
