I did a roadside just by popping the tyre off with the hole at the top, quick wipe with my shirt, light scratch up with sandpaper, glue on the patch (first thing to do so it's tacky) and inflate and wait. Air pressure seems to help it stick as well as a tube but I have used tubes in the past. Less of an issue now, these Vittorias seem to not bother puncturing like the probably a bit too light/fast maxxis did occasionally.
