  • I want power in a fairly remote location for 3 days. Enough to run a total wattage of around 3000w for 8 hours a day.

I could do it with batteries (a box of 150wh v-mount) but it would be stressful juggling and recharging at night, so would like effectively a power source on site I can plug into. I've seen things like the Instagrid One Max but seems fairly spendy to buy (3k or so). Similarly the Delta EcoFlow is about 2k but bigger and less power.

I'd rather not use a diesel generator because diesel but if I did, what would be the process? The things I'd want to power are ideally household plugs. Probably 8-10 of them. It's in the hills north of Swansea so am presuming not too far for delivery etc.

Any alternatives I haven't thought of?

  • That's a lot. 3 kW for 8 hours is 24 kWh. Multiply by 3 days and you're going to want 75 kWh or more in a battery. That's large EV battery territory and I don't think it'll be economic. Petrol gennie is the way to do this. Buy or hire a good quality silent one and it will be efficient and quiet, plus it'll have the power outlet you want. I'm not an expert on this but if you're actually going to be drawing 3 kW continuous, you probably want a generator rated at 4-5 kW continuous with 16A sockets.

  • 3000w for 8 hours a day

Is that eight hours autonomy before you can recharge/refuel? None of the battery options is anywhere near that, you're looking at 24kWh which is more than ten Instagrids.

When looking at an internal combustion powered generator, make sure you find one which is rated to run continuously at the required load, and bear in mind you'll need additional fuel to keep it running for 8 hours as small units don't come with big tanks. LPG is probably a better fuel choice than either petrol or diesel for a low-power long-run generator, they are typically what burger vans at festivals run on if there is no shore power.

  • Rent an EV with a Vehicle-to-Load adaptor?

  • Rave in Dartmoor? IN! ;)
