Maybe switch to a 26" Disc Trucker fork (45 mm vs. 38 mm offset)? That should give you a little more clearance. I'm not sure how much though. Maybe someone on here has been using that exact setup with mudguards.
Edit: Just saw your Wanted advert. You've obviously thought about going the trucker fork route already. ;-)

What's overlap like on small/medium Pompino's? I'd like to run 35's with mudguards fixed and it's a total non starter on my Steamroller.
