Android phones, apps and tablets

  • I'm right handed but use my phone one-handed with my left. I think it's from years of video gaming, left thumb is more dextrous.

  • Setting up a A7 lite tablet for my aging dad (iPhone user*). How do I make these tiny little navigation buttons bigger. Or do I need to download some sort of skin?

Also if anyone else has any tips to make it better for an old person - I have increased the fonts etc.

Idk what a modern iPhone is like to use, but as I'm not sure he does either I'm not overly fussed about making it behave the same.

    Cheers

  • Settings, accessibility, display size and text

  • That just does the text.

    The navigation is still tiny.

Just wondering if navigation gestures would be easier. Should probably have a play on his iPhone to see how that works.

  • Display size makes my buttons bigger, but I've not got all the extra apps hidden with them because it's a phone. Search works pretty well in settings, poke around with the search terms; size, navigation, dock, blue waffle and resolution.

  • The camera keeps crashing on my Samsung S9 - it's only 6 months old (ish)

I've tried resetting the settings and finally factory reset the whole phone but it's not working. Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be? Hardware? If so, I have a graveyard of smashed s9 parts - could it be replaced?

  • Can you try a 3rd party camera app? Does the camera work in other apps, like messaging apps (Signal etc)

That might help eliminate a hardware issue.

  • There's a one-handed mode in the accessibility settings

  • Phone mounts. Who makes good ones? I want something for the car to stick on the speedo display glass as the speedo on maps seems more accurate and it's right where I need it to be when following directions, so no articulation required. Not totally adverse to glueing a small mount on there but a suction cup that actually works would be best. Needs to hold an iphone and a moto G8 power, so a fair size difference.

Edit: think I just need one of these

  • Your car will fail its MOT if you obscure the speedo, so glue seems a bad idea.

I would also be concerned about what an insurance company might say in the event of an incident.

  • I've tried this and the 3rd party app has the same issue.

  • Missus found a setting on the Pixel to increase number of icons on home screen. Quite useful.
Expanding to 5x5 also adds another to the fixed row at the bottom right which updates with the last used app, which is kinda nice.

  • Other than checking the debug info and then searching the internet for similar issues and fixes, I'm not sure where to go from here. Sounds like it might be critical.

  • Thanks for the reply.

I have 4 smashed S9s here, so I'd like to swap the camera out. I just can't access the back of the phone. The glue that holds the glass is solid. 3 minutes under the grill and I still can't get it to lift. PITA

  • Thanks, good point. I'll mount it to the left then so it's over the rev counter

  • Are you super clumsy or did you source them from other people? :)

Interesting to see how you get on. Never had an S9 so wouldn't know where to start. Someone has probably done a video of it on youtube though.

  • I've had to replace the USB port on my S9 3 times and the fingerprint thing once.
Pro-tip - if it breaks it's much easier to remove. I just order a new back glass now along with the part I'm replacing every time I have to open it.

  • Nova launcher and 7 x 9 is the way.

  • I haven't got the eyesight for that.

  • broke the screen on my pixel 5 today - annoying.

is it worth fixing? seems like it will be over £100. if not, what's with the current crop of google phones?

the 7 doesn't seem to have any particular advantage over the 7a other than being a bit bigger, which i don't actually want.

  • 7a didn't appear to have any real advantages over the 6a (more megapixels, faster but less battery, heavier) so we go another 6a.

  • the 7a also has wireless charging in case that's important

  • It's not for me. Cables are Cool™

  • i disagree.
