  • Dodgy I should probably call a plumber to do this because it’s gas but they’ll probably stand there staring at it and not actually be able to fix it question.

I’ve got one of these Hotpoint hobs. It’s got those automatic shut-off devices that turn the gas off if the flame goes out, like most hobs now have. One of them has been temperamental for a while and randomly clicks out during cooking. A second one has started doing it and that one now won’t stay lit at all after I release the button. What’s the likely problem, is it common with modern hobs and is it easy to fix? The hob is clean, all the gas holes are clear and it’s clean around the sparkers and whatever the sensor thing is on the other side of the ring (thermocouple?).

  • I guess the only thing is that plumbers/boiler people /gas people might be similar to electricians in the regard that some will be willing to look at appliances and fault find while others only really deal with the supply. Worth asking over the phone anyway.

They won't be able to fix it on the first (diagnostic) visit, but replacing thermocouples is definitely a thing. If you want to pre-empt the matter, you could buy a set of thermocouples (might as well do them all at once now that they've started dying) and then call in the CORGI man to fit them.
