Broadband Internet & ISP Recommendations?

  • I think I managed to close my Virgin account, although it was a bit hard to tell, first I spoke to
a fast talking Indian person and then a Scottish person that was even harder to understand.

They have prepared scare stories about Community Fibre like they run all the neighbours through the same line and are not regulated by Ofcom, which somehow didn't stop Virgin from becoming shit.

  • also cancelled with Virgin but they didn't really try to offer an argument

"Oh - why would you like to cancel?"
"Community Fibre are available now and they're faster and cheaper"
    "Hmm, really? Faster than 1Gig?"
"Yeah - 1Gig both ways, so faster up, and £25 a month"
    "... ok ..."

  • Just bear in mind it won't really be £25.

I signed up to Community Fibre at the end of September on what was supposed to be a 24 month contract for 'half price' 1Gb (£50 down to £25). On the 1st April they put my bill up by 13% to £28.25, so I got exactly six months out of 24 at the advertised rate.

Apparently the £25 is for brand new customers only.

  • the £35 I had with Virgin for their 1Gb is now £42, and will be morelike £60 from next month when I'm out of contract, so it'll still end up cheaper even if it does go up a bit

  • Virgin did some hefty increases with their stuff (think it was a similar percentage increase but applied to the headline price rather than the price you were paying).

Saying that, when I phoned to complain it ended up with me paying a tenner less than I had been paying.

  • I'm up to 75 or so with virgin for 200mb broadband only and more times than not there are issues with connection. But I need to up/download a couple of terabytes a week so bog standard broadband wouldn't cut it. I fucking hate them and am literally cheering the engineers fitting City Fiber a few streets over when I drive past them. Would happily pay even more to anyone but virgin who could deliver comparable if it was more reliable and they didn't up their prices so ravenously every quarter.

  • I was paying £60 for 120Mbps down and 12Mbps up, now it's £25 for 500Mbs up and down with a rolling contract.

  • I have screengrabs of a Virgin chat where I get more and more irate as my requests like “I want to cancel my broadband, do not ask me questions about my new postcode/property and why I’m leaving or offer me a new contract” were followed up with “ we are sad that you are leaving Virgin, please enter your new address and postcode for a new broadband contract”
Went a bit honey badger in the end but finally managed to leave.

  • Yeah don't get me wrong they're still the best option for us, and most likely you too, just don't appreciate the sneaky shit. The product is great.

  • They have prepared scare stories about Community Fibre

Is this kind of shit not dubious, if not punishable, in the eyes of Ofcom?

Virgin are such a shower of cunts. It took several days and multiple lengthy phone calls to get them to terminate my account after I switched to Community Fibre.

  • At the moment I'm paying £54 a month with virgin including V6 TV box with sky sports and bt sport and 350Mbps broadband.

Unlike a lot of people I find it very reliable. Can probably count on one hand the number of times it has been down in the past three years. I do wonder in part whether that is because I use my own router and just user their crappy one in modem mode.

  • CF are great, Virgin are awful

  • Into the fourth week of no full fibre internet connection due to an issue with the external cabling. The issue is effecting multiple houses, therefore openreach have sent multiple engineers to assess the same issue even though the first engineer seemed to have diagnosed the issue, but then had to get a survey team back to site to work out how to reinstall the line. In the mean time openreach have kept on sending engineers to site at various ISP's requests even though the issue has been progressed beyond their skillset. BT insisted on sending one to my house, then cancelled on the day and had to pay me compensation, then the next day two openreach engineers turned up without notice to carry out the installation survey.

I work from home and don't have an office any more so I've had to buy a new phone to tether off and had two of the most unproductive weeks of my life over the first fortnight.

  • Same as you. Gigabit fibre (actual speed), two boxes and all sport, movies etc inc BT Sport. £60 a month.

No issue with Virgin at all.

  • I wonder what their reasoning behind different prices relative to service is? I'm in the south west now so expect some kind of rural premium but I don't feel 75 represents good value for a constantly interrupted 200mb internet-only service (or it wouldn't if there was literally any alternative that served my street). Are there lots of alternative suppliers near you?

  • I think it is just whatever you can argue out of them. My bills have a headline price of something like £140 and then a variety of discounts to bring it down.

I generally refuse to engage with the person at the call centre because what they offer is crap, say I'm leaving and then within a couple of days someone calls and offers a good deal (usually along what new customers get but a little cheaper).

Up until a few weeks ago Virgin were the only high speed option in my area.

  • Just been offered a 1gbps leased line for 232 a month.
    Almost tempted.

  • I considered this when I first moved in to my house and the only non-ADSL broadband provider was Virgin.

I could have swallowed the monthly cost, but not the £20K+ in wayleave fees etc to have the road dug up...

  • I was paying £64 a month just for the internet before ‘leaving’ then immediately signing up as a new customer with an 18 month deal. At which point I’ll do the same…

  • Virgin has now started their pestering campaign with repeated calls. I do have a confirmation text and email that they are closing my account so will not engage.

  • Openreach finally managed to temporarily fix my full fibre yesterday after more than three weeks, although the engineers turned up unannounced again. At 8am this morning another engineer arrived to come and 'fix my internet'. They're a complete shambles.

  • I'm most annoyed I can't get this.

I'm still going to try a Three 4G router and if that works I'll ditch Virgin package. Pity none of the cable alternatives are anywhere near west london.

  • I'm over £60/month with Virgin after minimising TV package and adding loyalty discounts.

I asked about removing TV package and their broadband only is the same price, ie. they penalise you for not taking their whole package. So, fuck them.

  • I'm in this boat and want to try 4G router. Have you thought about that option?

  • WTF. Are you a new customer or do you live in Scotland or something?

We have their shittest cable. I think 120Mbit, low TV package (no eurosport, no BT Sport, no movie channels) and don't use the landline and it's over £60 with supposed loyalty discounts applied.
