I’ve worked on the railways doing various contract commercial and infrastructure things for over 20 years. Meh.
5 years ago I took a job on a project to change the signals on East Coast Main Line from lights on sticks to in-cab digital wizardry and in that time I have become a full-on railway nerd. I flippin love it! We’re full into delivery now, putting the hardware in signal centre and on tracks, testing the software, training thousands of drivers, signallers, maintainers and support staff, we’re fitting hundreds of trains with kit including the entire national freight fleet and heritage locos including steam trains. We’re buying simulators and designing training courses and working out how to fit and run the old yellow plant that maintains the tracks. It’s amazingly immersive and touches almost every aspect of running a railway. If we get it right it’ll pave the way for how the railways work in the Uk, save billions and make train travel faster, safer, more reliable and far more sustainable. If we cock it up, we’ll end up in the daily Mail. Actually we’ll probably end up in the Mail either way.
Anyway. Trains. Yay. Here’s me and some work pals getting on a class 37 .
