  • Might need it to set some stuff up, these new iPhones are becoming fancy with nothing being totally straight forward.

Could maybe ask apple to see if they would need it.

  • Seems bananas. I imagine Apple would get around it without needing it but I can ask the question.

    https://www.timpson.co.uk/iphone-11-pro

Apple charge 289, Timpsons charge 159 but looks like it'd need to be couriered to manchester and be gone for a week.

ifixit instructions seem on the mid-high end of complexity and I'd need to spend at least 150 in parts/tools. Anyone ever repaired one themselves?

    Kinda tempted: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+11+Pro+Screen+Replacement/127512

  • they'll claim that they need it to test the screen repair
I think that was the case in the past, possibly to show face id status etc (which can be fucked even if the screen looks ok)
but I'm fairly certain that a proper repair place can do those sort of diagnostics without needing to know your pin now, and have been able to for a while. Apple stores don't need it anymore

  • I would absolutely not do this unless you reset the phone to factory defaults, send it in, then set it back up again when it comes back. Otherwise it's just begging for mischief.

  • I’ve only done two screen repairs on iphones and neither lasted more than a couple of months before they absolutely died - one of them busted because of battery swell TBF.
    YMMV

  • Not entirely Apple related but figure this might be a good place to ask.

I have a work laptop (HP/Windows 🤮) and the display is terrible. In the office this is fine as I have a couple of monitors. I occasionally travel for work want a second/higher quality display.

I have an iPad pro and asked IT for Duet Display but they won’t allow it because it allows remote control of the PC. Is there anything similar that will allow me to use my iPad as a display but not allow remote log in?

My work will buy me one of those portable displays but as I will have the iPad with me anyway want to avoid the extra weight.

  • It's very likely that Plugable have one in a close-enough configuration.

  • Newer iPads will let you Airplay a screen to them. Could you get an Airplay client for the Windows machine?

  • iCloud storage price hike..

  • I know, fuckin jokers.

If there was a middle ground of 250 to 2TB it would be better.

  • Anyone have a spare Apple Pencil tip? They only seem to sell them in packs and I really just need one.

  • Afternoon all, I've never been in this thread before but I'm hoping someone may be able to help me

I'm trying to use a 2012 iMac as an external display for a 2023 MacBook Pro

According to info online the mbp is unable to use target display.

Does anyone know of a workaround?

  • No chance I don’t think. You need an older OS than MBP will ship with and you can’t downgrade to high sierra etc as it won’t support Apple silicon.

  • That's way I was thinking. Thanks for your help

  • I'm looking to upgrade my old iPhone SE to something newer with significantly better cameras, but I'm struggling to make sense of how significant the differences are between the newer multi-lens iPhones is. The options (within my realistic budget) are:

    1. iPhone 11 - brand new and sealed at my local dodgy-ish 'fone' shop for £350, and can probably be haggled down to £300

    2. iPhone 12 Mini - much prefer the smaller form factor, probably £400 sealed off eBay

    3. iPhone 13 Mini - same as above but more like £500 new

Use case is hiking/biking photos in all conditions for posting on socials and my website, which is why I'm moving away from a dedicated traditional camera. Looking for something new rather than refurbished so I can get on the Applecare train (cracked screen is a likely issue knowing me), but is the £100/£200 bump worth it to go up from the 11 to something newer?

Any views would be really appreciated - my first time buying a 'fancy' phone so struggling to decide how much to stretch to

  • I don't know about the newer ones but the cameras on my iPhone 11 Pro are fucking amazing.
I won a photography competition with one a few years ago.

  • Apple offer 0% finance over 24 months.

You can get an iPhone 13 Mini (128GB) with Applecare+ for £33.24/mo for 24 months.

(The Applecare+ with theft and loss cover is an extra £2.09/mo but I get mobile phone cover through my bank so I didn't bother with this.)

  • Does Applecare cover get cracked screen replaced? Didn't know

  • If I were you I'd get a 12 mini.
Think that's the sweetspot regarding price / features / future-proofness etc.
Also if you already know you like the smaller form factor then definitely get that 👍
The 13 mini's camera doesn't offer much over the 12.

Personally I never had Apple Care; always found it too expensive, plus I've found even a thin leather case coupled with a screen protector really is enough, assuming you don't throw your phone on the tarmac five times every day.

    £25 excess

  • Thanks for the link

  • Very sage advice, thanks y'all - will scope out the other local fone shops to see if there's any 12 Mini stock kicking around

Applecare monthly is a great deal for me - £3.49 ish per month is affordable, but a whole new iPhone/iPad more than once every 3-4 years is pretty much out of scope for me financially. That plus having a permanent hand injury that means I'm prone to drop things unexpectedly, it's highly reassuring

  • Id get 13 mini

  • Need advice from people more familiar with ios browsers and apps. Got my hands on Ipad Pro for really good price to replace my dying Tab S3, and aside from worse screen and sound, it's been not that bad. Except for internet cancer known as ads. I use Firefox on all my devices to sync tabs and logins and all of them running adblock, of course. What are my ad-free browsing options on ios? I am even fine with changing browser until that one EU regulation about 3rd party browsers and app stores goes into full effect.

  • Just download NextDNS and run that. Should stop ads loading across any browser.
