  • What's the terrain? How far?

Get a demo bike and give it a go!

  • saw this on fb;
If you're in #London this week, we're giving you a Brompton Bike Hire code to combat the Tube and Rail strikes happening😍
Use code ‘STRIKE’ on the BBH App for one day free bike hire. This code will be valid from 20th July – 30th July

  • Need to get my bike road worthy again - when it was put away the headset was notched and the rear rim had a hole in the braking surface...

What's the best replacement headset I can fit? Ideally something with cartridge bearings.

Will need to rebuild the rear wheel but fancy going from the 3 speed hub to single speed - is there good 3rd party wheel options or should I just buy a Brompton wheel?

  • Ultralight Brompton headset and buy a fully built wheel, it's cheaper and less hassle.

+sbbohr probably have some minimods stuff about.

  • Brompton stuff is bloody pricey.

Joseph Kuosac headset, and contact me for custom wheel builds.

  • Hmmm... Pretty sure I have a barely used single/two speed rear wheel stashed away.

Drop me a PM if keen.

  • Thanks. What sort price is a wheel? Need to do everything on budget at the moment.

  • ‘Combat’ the strikes is an interesting word choice from Brompton.

  • Don't understand what is so difficult about taking out a rear wheel. It is like any other three speed hub. Or are the others more difficult?

  • Need a front wheel?

  • Ever come across needing to remove the spacer on these ? Had one fitted and noticed play couple week later. Shop have removed spacer to make it work and say the stack height must be wrong.

Edit - literally says this in the SJS product notes ! hah

  • Its a bit harder because the chain tensioner is in the mix. And the brakes don't have quick release so invariably you forget and have to deflate tire to get back in.

  • Right, but on top of what @sheppz says, I am guessing that 99% of Brompton owners don't own any other three speed IGH bikes and therefore are not used to the process of unscrewing the little chain thingy and so on and so forth. Compared to a normal road or mountain bike with a normal derailleur, I think everyone would agree that its more time consuming/difficult.

  • Yep, I wrote that a few years back!

  • Didn't think of it like that, thought that hub gears were a think most youngsters came across.

Also puncture proof tyres are a new thing ;)

  • nothing compared to taking wheel out of [redacted] steel frame with misaligned dropouts tho

  • muahahaha that really got me. I always thought tight spacing was an issue more than misalignment.

  • Cheers. I've got a C-Line Explore recently, nowhere local to me stocks the P-Line range to try or I would have. Just started commuting from Southampton to Waterloo, then cycling from Waterloo to Camden. So all city commute about 25 - 30 minutes each way. 4 days a week though, so the weight saving looked appealing but a fair wack extra price wise. Might just upgrade the roller wheels to the easy ones and hopefully that's good enough to cut most of the carrying around out.

  • So all city commute about 25 - 30 minutes each way

do you think that is faster than the northern line all in? i go to goodge st once a week from waterloo and am considering a brompton... but at the same time probably dont need one

  • Got some nicer Eerder bits for my Brompton recently.

I bought the rear fold latch too but it didn’t work on mine* so it’s on Mrs m_v’s bike instead.

*my frame was missing its seat clamp when I got it so I had to remake it and I didn’t quite get it right.

Also chucked on a new set of Marathon Racers as my ancient Marathon Pluses were knackered. Not quite worn out but the wires that make up the bead started sticking out and shit.

New (to me) Carradice City Folder too. Straps seem really long so might have to get cutty with it t otherwise a nice bag.

  • Legit best brom on here still !

  • Less time on the tube....

  • When I used to work at Somerset House, the time it took on the Brommer from Waterloo was only very slightly faster than walking across the bridge or hopping on the bus, but that wasn't the point. This way, you can safely ride your bike to the main station, not the small one near you, not have to lock a bike up, not have to be driven or drive to the station, just take it on the train and then hop off at the other end without having to cram yourself into a metal tube. Even if you don't need one, it definitely is more pleasant. Though that junction outside the Lion King is grim.

And then once you have it, you'll realise how superb it is for doing little food shops and running errands and you'll be like shit why didn't I get one of these before... much like I have now realised after not having one for 8 or so years.
