Dynamo Lights

  • I've just fitted a front rack and now need to extend the cable that runs from my front light to the rear (Son to Son)

The existing cable is Coaxial and that little piece of cable I've been saving for 2 years just in case I want to fit a rack, has disappeared.

Can I use standard electric cable? The type with 2 channels/wires together as one? e.g. speaker wire

  • I need a reasonably strong front light that can be mounted from above( to fit under a front rack).
i have a B&M IQ-X on another bike but they seem to have gone up to £150.
    Any alternatives?

  • I have an old SON 28 klassik on my old single speed's front wheel running some cheap B&M combo, it's a bit of a chunk but rolls smoothly at any speed I've been able to hit. On my new bike I have the newer SON28 with the spherical hub design and running SON front and rear lights, and I definitely notice a buzzy feel and sharp rise in effort somewhere around the low 30kph region, when the lights are switched on.

  • Supernova E3 Pure 3 or Son edelux have variants that are mean to be to mounted upside-down, but those are not exactly cheaper. Only the Son Edelex upside-down WITH switch allows for a tail light: explanations

On amazon you have the IQ-X for 72.22 GBP

  • I have the upside-down Son Edelux with a Son rear light. The method of connection is different, that's all.

  • What I find annoying on the IQ-X is that when you rotate the mount the cable still comes out at the
    bottom and is more exposed.

  • I thought it was weird too! Read it there but then found this explanation . Corrected my post.

  • my SON delux 12 has started to sound a bit rough - i thought the brake rotor was rubbing at first. does anybody have any handy tricks to deal with this before I unbuild the wheel to send to Germany? bike hasn't been ridden much in a while so i reckon my first stop is just to get it moving again

  • Just get the considerably cheaper B&M IQ XS (which can't be mounted upside-down) and attach it with a Nitto bracket to your rack. It'll be almost as good but half the price of an X.

  • Anyone tried setting up 2 front lights on one Dynamo? I've seen the Speedvagen setup with 2 sinewaves, one run on batteries one run on the Dynamo itself. Wattage would be biggest problem right? And how would the cable setup look like?

  • Nothing you can do if the bearings are done. SON service is very good though, I payed like 40€ to send it in for a complete service including checking and servicing bearings and in my case also repairing bent stators.

You can also send in the whole wheel afaik

  • Peter White says that you'll never get acceptable light out of two edluxs run off one hub. I've been meaning to try but never go around to it.

  • Yeah I figured. Maybe I try it sometime for shits n giggles and be very underwhelmed with the result

  • I don't know enough about LEDs to know whether this is something that future innovation might improve, or whether LEDs are already close to their theoretical maximum efficiency. I suspect that at the moment the R&D on improving LED lights is primarily focused on delivering more power through improved battery technology.

  • Would be tempted to try it in the hope that it would annoy Peter White.

@Thrasher you still got that supernova triple 2 ? Might be interested, though only if I fail to repair mine (rear light has started flickering, which I'm hoping is an easy repair and just a loose cable inside).

  • Somebody made a proper test with 2 lights on a dynamo, the results are that it only makes
sense from 25km/h or higher speed.

  • The IQ-XS has died again on our tandem – sealing issues I suspect as we woke up one morning to find the lens fogged up with condensation. I've given up and will now start swapping the Edelux from my winter bike onto the tandem for each tour.

Anyway, to do this, I need a ring connector for the rear light. I don't really want or need 50 from SJS. Will these (10 x 5mm) do the job or, better still, is anyone sitting on a stash of SON connectors and could be tempted to part with one for £££?

  • I may have a SON ring connector, and I'm in Bristol. I'll try to remember to have a look later...

  • I’ve got this unused one from a SON install on one our our bikes, PM me your address and I’ll pop it in the post for you.

  • @si_mon628 + @RunRabbitRun – both very generous offers. I'll wait to see what Simon says first as it could save you a trip to the post office!

    LFGSS is great 😍

  • Anyone mounted a light to a mudguard mount under the fork crown? Wondering if i used sufficient loctite whether I could get a supernova bracket onto there? Will be using offroad so imagine quite likely a bad idea...

(ignore messy bits of tape and the wire)

  • Like that?

    Maybe this holder

  • Exactly like this. Though was assuming regular supernova mount would work with a slightly longer bolt.
