• Yep, a phone was stolen from a tourist by one of those guys around Buckingham palace on Friday. Didn't see it happen just a guy sprinting up the road yelling "that's my phone"

  • haven't been for a few years
    it's this friday right ?

  • Sure is! Between 7pm -whenever the mass feels like moving.

  • How can we make sure it goes past Shell's office right by London Eye? Can the beast be tamed?

  • Usually rolls off around 7:30pm

Get on the front and see where you can lead

  • Do they have any liability insurance?

  • Who would have liability insurance? There is no organiser, as confirmed by the highest court in the land (at the time the House of Lords).

  • So how was it?

  • Mass happens every month. There were probably about 150 riders on it yesterday at its busiest. Summer rides get three times that number, easily. There was one in June or July 2021 when things were opening up after lockdown that stretched from the bricklayers arms to the elephant roundabout all down the new Kent road, hard to estimate numbers but possibly six or seven hundred.

That Instagram account has good clips, click on the Reels to see video footage from recent rides.

  • First Extra Mass ride of the summer happens next Monday night, 7pm at the BFI.

  • Midsummer mass this Friday night.

  • I was on the ride earlier but went home at Brixton, so missed the above. Lots of heat on various clickbait Instagram feeds about it as well as Reddit

  • What actually happened? The reddit requires a login...

  • Lots of bikes blocking traffic. Big grey 4x4 (Porsche Cayenne?) starts to move forward. Lots of cyclists move out the way. Someone throws their bike in front of the large vehicle which crushes it. Large vehicle collides with another cyclist on their bike as it speeds away, the cyclist and bike are spun round but manage to stay upright.

  • Thanks. That certainly sounds shitty :-(

" Thirteen years ago, riding through central London on my way to meet a friend one evening, I found myself surrounded by hundreds of cyclists, some blaring horns, one popping wheelies, and even someone covered in lights, thundering out drum’n’bass from a mobile sound system.

In spite of being overdressed in a shirt and my best trousers, I was taken by the spontaneous solidarity of this diverse group, who I later found was mostly made up of strangers.

Having been swept along in their pack, we made our way to the West End as other traffic momentarily came to a halt to let us pass, while perplexed tourists and shoppers looked on.

This was my first experience of Critical Mass, a monthly, leaderless event held around the world, which promotes safer cycling by riding in numbers. "

^ this is exactly how i discovered critical mass around 2007, a random encounter
have fun this weekend one and all, get out there and support this unique event

  • I had exactly the same thing happening around the same time in Soho.

  • Well that was fun.

Brief glimpses of forum folk en route, a short roll with Skully, and some London cycling legends from prehistory.
