• We run a 3x9 drivetrain on our tandem. We use bar end shifters set up in friction mode (there's too much cable drag and flex in the frame to get the indexing to work consistently).

I would like to replace the old 9-speed XT M770 rear derailleur. It's gone a bit sloppy and I'd like a derailleur with a clutch.

Bearing in mind I run friction shifters, is there any reason why this bargainous derailleur wouldn't work?

I can't see an issue with the fact I'd be pairing a 1x derailleur with a multi-chainring setup as the 40t capacity comfortably exceeds my requirements (37t). Shimano says the low sprocket minimum for this derailleur is 51t but we use an 11-36t cassette. Does that truly matter?

However, will the 9-speed chain make it a non-starter? I am not overly familiar with how chain width affects pulley wheel compatibility. Afaik, the inner width of 9-speed chains is the same , and it is only the outer width that changes.

Should I just make the tandem 1x? 🙃

Guidance is welcomed with open arms.
