  • Luckily:

    • It's a small house
    • They're not stuck on well
    • They're only in three rooms
  • I need to get a new drill, and it’s probably also the time to “buy in” to a battery standard as I’ll likely grab other tools soon too.

Anybody come across a good deal lately, and I feel like it’s been a while since the brand wars reignited. What’s the word?

  • The word is how much do you want to spend?
There’s no massive difference between the brands (despite what anyone wants to argue about).

  • I guess the Power For All stuff from Bosch seems a bit cheap, I’m happy to pay for something that will last so I’m expecting to pay over ÂŁ100 for a normal cordless drill. I don’t know if I’m just being seduced by the idea of something else being reassuringly expensive though

  • So I’ve just deleted a long response 2 times in a row by switching between tabs on my phone. Lol.

Get 18v, get 2x batteries, get 3ah minimum batteries.
It’s hard to spend less than £130
Buying a drill and impact driver is more useful for DIY.

  • Absolute budget option at ÂŁ139 erbauer twin pack. Small batteries tho (2ah)
    https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-eid18-li-ecd18-li-2-18v-2-x-2-0ah-li-ion-ext-brushless-cordless-twin-pack/542fv

  • Double your budget lol. ÂŁ200 but good 5ah batteries and better drill/impact
    https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-ecd18-li-2-eid18-li-18v-2-x-5-0ah-li-ion-ext-brushless-cordless-twin-pack/173xp

  • If you’re positive you only want a drill:
    ÂŁ130 erbauer
    https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-ecd18-li-2-18v-2-x-4-0ah-li-ion-ext-brushless-cordless-combi-drill/609fv

    Or ÂŁ150 Bosch
    https://www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-gsb-18-v-55-18v-2-x-4-0ah-li-ion-coolpack-brushless-cordless-combi-drill/506jf
But while the Bosch is good, they’re generally less common than erbauer, Milwaukee or Dewalt so might not be as handy for deals on other tools.

  • FWIW screwfix deals seem a bit average at the moment. But the toolstation website is being a pain on my phone so can’t check those to compare.

  • Any as long as you never touch a Philips screw apparently.. honestly I'd say a 10.8v or 12v with the chucks to get in awkward places will do the vast majority of stuff, if you want to do timber framing sure get an impact drive and if you want to get through 4" of concrete get a corded SDS, - if you go that way, go to a decent supplier and be the guy who wants to hold them (if you think it's Mikki mouse walk away).... But .. the "all rounder" is a combi drill and impact drive set at 18v

  • I went with Milwaukee for the small stuff and spent lot more than necessary but they seem to be very robust. If I deem the chargable Milwaukee version too expensive (this is more the case with the 'construction' stuff they sell I guess), I tend to get the cheap mains powered stuff from amazon or any tool dealer (I found out there are lots of online tool dealers with various campaigns going on all the time, they also sell on eB**).
RYOBI looks nice and seems to have a good spread on the budget end but I've never even held one. Aldi/Lidl has some offerings but if you need a specific tool (and you've built up the brand-specific battery stock over time) and the tool is out of stock then chances are you're not going to find it anywhere.

Also if you use the screwfix app there are plenty of discounts after the first order (10% off, ÂŁ35 off ÂŁ100, ÂŁ15 off ÂŁ50, ÂŁ5 off ÂŁ30, and such) it also enables no-interaction collections you just check-in on the app and do a 'sup to the collection person.

  • where's all the f*$king adhesive you lucky bastard. no shit coving glued onto the walls to force you to decorate them as well

  • Cheers all - @Nef ÂŁ200 for two tools is definitely ok with me. the Dewalt might take it for the niche reason that their strimmers are easier to get replacement spools for (or at least its impossible for the Erbauer according to the comments), plus 3 year warranty

  • Wouldn’t leave that wood there - it might have things in it that will get out and start nibbling your floorboards.

  • I've not looked at any prices but I have always found https://its.co.uk/ to come out best price for DeWalt when I have bought in the last 2 years.

  • Hadn't considered that, thanks for mentioning.

  • I got DeWalt. Partly as they seem to have good deals, partly as they have a decent range of other stuff at not too expensive and partly as I like the yellow.

I didn't get an impact driver at the time and regretted it and ended up buying one separately (you can get them for ÂŁ40-ÂŁ50).

Powertoolmate is another one to look at for deals. Quite a lot of these businesses also sell on eBay and often there are 15% off deals on eBay.

  • ITS were great when they had their free battery offer for dewalt stuff in may but since then i've found ffx.co.uk to be cheaper for the (many many) dewalt tools i've been buying. in a lot of cases the its price without vat is the same as the with vat price at ffx.

i still just chuck the tool model number in google before I buy just in case as has been cheaper at powertoolworld and a couple of other places for a couple of bits.

  • If you download and order through the Screwfix or Toolstation app, you get 10% off your first order.

  • I love my dewalt brushless drill and planned to stick with them for all new tools but recently needed a jigsaw and made the snap decision to switch to ryobi - cheaper and they have a big range. Now running a circular saw, jigsaw and cordless hoover. Totally fine for diy use.

  • Yeah that’s fair, I have a corded ryobi jigsaw that’s seen enough use to test it and it’s never missed a beat. Went for the dewalt set in the end, looking forward to finding a seized bolt on my moto to test the impact driver

  • Was going to say dewalt as Screwfix recently had a good deal, but I guess from the chat above it sounds like it's ended.

Although all my cordless stuff is dewalt (and I'm really happy with them) whenever I've been shopping for tools bare body Makita stuff seems to be the cheapest (or best VFM) out of Bosch Blue/dewalt/makita.

So if there is a deal out there for brushless including 2 batteries and the price difference is negligible, I'd tend towards Makita as I think it'll be cheaper in the long term as you add to it.

I know Milwalkie have had a big marketing drive over the last few years, but I think the number of blue or yellow kit you see UK trades use tells you that you can't go wrong with either dewalt or makita.
