Chain tensioner doesn’t spring at you if you remove the chain - and therefore spring tension - first.
Mine is singlespeed so I don’t have to deal with the gear cable but if I did I’d probably fit a quick release thing like I used to have on a Sachs/sram 3 speed hub.

Should be possible to integrate that into other hub gear systems as it goes with a standard threaded control rod/chain end.
