A cyclist killed in a hit-and-run on Friday evening was a man in his 40s, police have said today. It is thought a silver Audi S3 rammed into the man as he cycled along Ling Road, in Loughborough, at about 8pm.

The car is thought to have then been driven to Frederick Street, near Queen's Park in the town centre, and set alight. The car was later recovered by Leicestershire Police, officers who have made three arrests in connection with the incident.

this happened just at the bottom of the road where I live, and on which I ride pretty much every day. a dual carriageway which has a supposed 30 limit which many drivers ignore.

    RIP to the rider.

  • RIP rider

I know that bit of road and like you say, lots of drivers speeding on it and driving impatiently

  • they've bailed the three that were arrested. I guess that's normal while they're under investigation?
I hope there's some dash cam footage that can identify the driver.

  • RIP (@Velocio)

  • Bail is the default. It should only be refused if the person is likely to commit an offence or run away.

There is no bail if charged with murder (and a few other offences) but not causing death by dangerous driving.

  • update; rider has been named by police as Anthony Smith, aged 47

This morning I have written to my local councillors urging them to take action on road safety on this stretch of road, and have offered to meet them at the location to highlight the particular dangers. i'll update here if I receive a response.

    RIP Anthony

  • I'm local as well, seems unusual for them to torch the car?
My initial thoughts were it might be deliberate; they were using the car as a weapon.

  • Stolen to joyride or something? Thanks @bigshape

    RIP Anthony Smith

  • It sounds like they fled the scene. Maybe tried to torch it so it looked like a theft. Savage tbh.

  • that's my assumption as well.

the possibly drugged up driver knew they'd seriously injured someone so ditched and burned the car so they could report it 'stolen' to avoid jail time.

who knows though. it's a busy bit of road so hopefully there were witnesses who can identify the driver.

i've had responses from the councilors i wrote to and they have agreed something needs to be done. they seemed quite receptive to meeting me at that bit of road so i could point out how bad it is in person.

  • a bit of an update on this - i received an email from one of the councilors i'd been in contact and i'm meeting them on the 10th August at the roundabout/junction where the fatality happened to discuss the road layout.
I still don't have any further info on the incident.
