As you say, I'm not about period-correctness, it's all about combining retro beauty with rideability and reliability for me.

I saw some of @retrodicorsa s bikes yesterday. Thing about them is they aren't beautiful but clunky period pieces with stupid gearing and shonky steering. They are viable alternatives to a modern everyday road bikes at better prices and with better build quality for the most part. I'm going to claim one myself and it won't be hanging on the wall.
