I had a TV above the fireplace in my old place and never noticed any issues, also ideal for setting surround sound up with it being in the centre of the wall. Admittedly I also had reclining sofas so that probably helped.

Then I got a girlfriend and all those things gradually went ...

Isn't film sound mixed for speakers behind the screen rather than either side?
