  • My downtube shifters have some squiggly corrosion on them, which seems odd as I don't ride the bike all that much. If/when I want to tidy them up, high grade wet and dry then lacquer?

  • Yeah, that would probably work. Whether or not the effort to get a decent finish again is worth it is another question.

  • Yeah quite. Annoyed me at first but it's there to be used not looked at so probably best left alone!

  • For an even finish the anodising would need removing, which would be very difficult because of the ribbing. So I agree it's best left.

  • Pro make a long one that doesn’t have the top lip that sits on the top of the steerer

    I don’t know but have wondered if the top lip of the deda is a good thing or not

  • Never enough toys and tools i will disappear down another rabbit hole for lunch .

  • Top lip on Deda prevents the body from falling into the steerer if you haven't tightened it up.

    I use Columbus', 11.99 and easily available.

    I think that's actually craquelure. The blue tint on those parts is a lacquer which shrinks and becomes embrittled as it ages and the plasticisers bake out or break down by environmental exposure. Think of it as character rather than decay and keep riding.

  • Dare I say, I think you might be wrong... it looks like filiform corrosion to me, as it seems to be spreading perpendicular to that horizontal scratch

  • Interesting from both of you. Given it's only really taken hold on the rear shifter which sees more sweaty finger action (narf), filiform corrosion (which i had to look up) seems to fit the bill. In any case, the diagnosis of "Think of it as character rather than decay and keep riding" is spot on, thanks all for the input

    I was looking on Amazon for some bigger hands but this will do nicely!

  • Nevermind, cranks I have to actually fit and give what seems like a perfectly acceptable chainline.

  • I’m trying to replace this lever assembly on an ultegra rim brake calliper - actually I only need to replace the threaded portion for the cable pinch bolt as the current one is fkd - trying to undo the little Allen key that is presumably holding it together just makes the whole assembly spin.

    Has anyone ever done this before?

  • You need to hold the 'threaded' portion with pliers while undoing the little Allen key. The little Allen bolt is loctited so will need like a shock force and a good new Allen key with no flex.

    Careful if you do get it open as the is a small spring and ball bearing inside that with shoot out.
