Gotta intimidate potential alien invaders. If they believe that an isolated prison continent surrounded by man-eating sharks, populated by venomous everything, that’s routinely blanketed by fire/water/vermin, is considered by most humans to be a highly desirable place to live, they’ll think twice before fucking with us.
