Ha! Snap/refresh fail.

Haha ffs of course this exists! Will give it a try, but in the meantime if anyone else has first hand experience of using ply for bookshelves let me know.

Is there such a thing as sealant/silicone type thing on a roll of tape. I'm fitting this on a marble countertop and would prefer not to smear silicone everywhere.

Also, I was planning on having the waste hole cut in the marble pretty big, like 70mm diameter, for easy access to the waste. Any reason why I shouldn't?

I’d just use silicone though, it’s not like you’ll see it.

Once someone on here advised masking up before using sealant I've found I can do it very neatly even though I am very amateur at it.

Unless I put on too much and it squishes out the sides.
I found this which I like the look of.

25mm ply is heavy to start with, especially across 2300mm. I used 18mm across about 1200mm and didn't trust it without a central support (so at 600 in from either end). I looked at the sagulator mentioned and probably overbuilt it from there.

The depth of the shelf and what it'll have on it make a difference as well - if it's one paperback deep you might be alright but if it's e.g. vinyl LP depth it might struggle without some intermediate supports which come out to nearly the front edge.

I used 18mm birch ply with full depth (standard) brackets at not more than 600mm spacing. In my case that was one at each end plus one in the middle.
Across 2.4m I'd reckon 24mm will flex under it's own weight. Your rear edge brackets will limit that but i'd worry the front edge could sag in the middle once loaded. If not immediatly then later.

OK yeah, I’ve used 18mm before with standard brackets which did sag a bit with books, so was hoping 25mm with some support along the back would help - but hadn’t considered the weight of the boards themselves at that length!
Now looking at a central vertical support and worrying it’s straying outside my skillset…

Thinking about a bureau again, I've doubled up 18mm MDF for the top, does anyone make soft open stays capable of dealing with 19KG and 70cm of top? It's about 700KG/cm of torque from what I can tell!

Or maybe I could put something on the underside to break the fall...

On the subject of desks, minor minor detail, but where is everyone drilling their cable tidy holes? I was originally going to go off on one edge, but now I am thinking middle edge makes more sense as its closest to monitor (which is the real stinker cable wise).

Any smarts around this I'm all ears.

I always wondered if you could route out a square with round edges, then cut some different peices of ply to fit flush using a little frame under to hold it level.

Then drill one of those peices to your exact requirements, and if they change drill another.

YES! I worked out what you meant. Yeah basically a chamfered edge or something, I have asked a pal to do some for me as he has all the tools, hopefully he will be able to, just a question of numbers. Thinking two now.

The charger is in the wrong place to be useful - it does pop up though, which is fun.

The others are various USB hubs, card readers etc...

That does look good. Thats a lot of gubbins.
Just drilled a single 60mm hole and its doing the job, can't work out if I like the idea of plugs or anything.
My through the desk charger is a bit of a pain.

Some cable tidy things would be a good idea too, I could add weights so they pulled under the desk when not in use.

Just a proper tray with a power socket solution in it would be a good start. I think weights would need to be hidden behind panelling or something (I can just imagine the weights under my sink that pull the hose thing down - they need a lot of room, so seeing it under my actual desk would be offensive. Is there a way of shutting it off without needing to remove the (asbestos) bath panel?

That much I can do - but to shut the tap off so we can flush the toilet etc?
