I'm with you on that.
It's fine if you're at home, using your own tools which are your responsibility to keep clean. In a commercial workshop where some greasy fingered little fucker has been pawing the bb tool I want to keep it as far from the rotor as possible.
I think with DT 240 and 12mm axles you can use either type of lockring without issue, I always prefer external lockrings that use a BB tool rather than the internal type which use a cassette tool, but that is just personal preference.
