• I think with DT 240 and 12mm axles you can use either type of lockring without issue, I always prefer external lockrings that use a BB tool rather than the internal type which use a cassette tool, but that is just personal preference.

  • Why? I hate using the BB ones - the tool sits too close to the disc. Have to for my dynamo hubs which is annoying as I need to carry two tools in the bike box.

  • I normally find I get better tool purchase as the cassette tool has to be so thin to clear the lockring and sometimes it doesn't insert very far. It's also harder to find nice black (or fancy anodised) ones compared to the external style.

    It's fine if you're at home, using your own tools which are your responsibility to keep clean. In a commercial workshop where some greasy fingered little fucker has been pawing the bb tool I want to keep it as far from the rotor as possible.
