Weirdly they are doing that tentacle roots thing so much the main stem appears to be levitating, don’t remember that from last year
Is that from the top soil washing away when you water them exposing the roots?
Might need to be a bit more gentle. -

Oh you know what it almost definitely is. One of the watering cans has lost its rose recently facepalm
-
• #3754
I’ve had the tentacle root thing before on the odd plant I didn’t transplant properly. Didn’t seem to do them too much harm IIRC.
-

It can make them a bit vulnerable to strong winds though, I think I lost a couple this year because they got clean blown over. Or maybe it was pigeons crashing into them 🤷🏼

Not great actually, we haven't been on top of watering or feeding so they are looking a bit tired

We have runners!

Our beans are truly pathetic compared to those. Hopefully they’ll catch up soon.
Did have our first strawbs yesterday though, were ace. -

I had to rescue a greedy pigeon from under the nets of my neighbouring plots strawberry bed. Damn those 🍓 looked good too!

Been picking courgettes and digging up potatoes for a while now, watering is a proper chore

Remind me, is yours the plot were you can only use manual tools?
-
• #3762
Is that a thing? Can’t imagine doing without a strimmer
-
• #3763
Pretty sure someone on here doesn’t have water and someone can’t use power tools, hopefully not the same person as that would be brutal. Was asking as if it were me, I’d Strim that part to the side asap before the seed sets and gets into the cultivated ground.

I've got a scythe, it's incredibly effective in place of a strimmer for weeds.

Nipped up the plot this morning to see if I had dropped an inhaler. Something’s ripped up my sweetcorn 😭

Tbh you’d probably be better using a scythe on that lot.

Yea, no power tools, no hosepipes. There is water in cistern things, big enough to dunk a bucket like a medieval peasant. I’d be tempted to mow next door, but it’s another plot, so taboo. Ours was like that a year ago, it’s do-able, but it doesn’t look like anyone’s felt up to it this year…

I’d complain to the council, tbh. They should send someone down to brush cut it. Wish I’d complained a bit more to our council about some plots near me given how much they’ve started to pester me about the modest mess on my plot.

Yep, that's me. Pretty sure strimmers are allowed but I don't have one and only recently got some shears to cut the long grass down. My neighbours all have pristine plots so they probably all hate me!

sweetcorn
Boo, that’s sucks. Badgers?

Local fruit nursery is doing 4yr old apple trees for a tenner - already put two in the garden so got two more for the allotment. Hope we get some rain soon!

More berries in today and dug up some spuds that were looking a bit peaky. Got a perfect batch of new taters out of it.
First potato salad of the year with chives, basil and other bits from the plot.

Have they got any interesting varieties?

A few different - this is a Pinova and Topaz.

Dang, 4yos for a tenner! Guess it's the 'wrong' time to be selling apple trees.
How's your Rhubarb going?
I needn't have worried that mine wouldn't get going as 2 of the freshly planted crowns are now going great guns.
