• Sometimes it's the little wins that are really satisfying.

Bought a hydrangea two(?) years ago. We spent ages dithering about where to plant it, then went on holiday. It all but died. I planted it. It started to sprout a few hopeful shoots only to be destroyed by slugs. After more care and judicious use of slug pellets, it has just about returned to the size we bought it and showing hope of a couple of flowers.

The rest of the garden is in such a state at the moment, it's nice to have moments like this.

I've also almost finished cleaning the patio with the optimistic aim of sealing it tomorrow evening. I think I'm just going to have to accept some cement marks. I'm just desperate now to get pots and tables back on it.

Protip: clean and pressure wash black limestone before laying. Then seal. Then make sure your trades clean it as they go and clean it again at the end of the day. Then again at the end of the job.

  • I know this is going to sound mental but have you tried toothpaste and a scrubbing brush to remove the cement marks? I only say this as we were having a barny with a brickie about the state he left a bull nose window sill by not cleaning off the quite severe mortar smudges. We couldn’t shift and he came back with toothpaste and made it 95% good.
