• Can you over water a tomato plant?

  • My understanding is that deliberately depriving them of water a bit helps the flavour, but I feel like it would be a struggle to drown one unless it was deliberate

    Definitely, the branches and leaves curl up like a pigs tail. And it’s particularly an issue if you drown it when the fruit are becoming ripe because they split and go mouldy.
    It’s a bit like a new house plant - first year with toms I over watered, second year I under watered. Just about got the measure of it now but I’m still at the mercy of the weather as our greenhouse can get insanely hot even with all the vents open and a shade tarp covering one side.
    It’s also one of the reasons I don’t use grow bags as I can’t judge how damp the compost is. But as you can see in my previous pictures, I keep my pots in trays and by the end of the seasons quite a few roots have made their way in for a drink. The airpots have a raised base inside so the compost isn’t completely sat in water.
