  • There doesn't seem a lot of soil for the size of the plant?

  • Water and they’ll be grand in about half an hour.

Edit: check the soil to see how dry it is but it looks like wilting.

  • It’s a system that’s linked to the grow bag below it, I think.

  • That's clever.

What's the purpose / reasoning? Just a space thing?

  • Ah! I see the grow bag now. I do the same thing only I use a plastic pot with the bottom cut out and put into the grow bag.

Yours looks like the Pro version :).

  • I think the idea is that you plant the toms into the grow bag and put the pot over the top. Then gradually fill the pot up around the stem where the hairs grow into more roots providing (in theory*) more tomatoes. Maybe the outer pot provides somewhere to water.

*possibly in practice, too. It may well work, I don’t have any data either way.

  • My neighbour swears by those green things, water reservoir on the outside which drip feeds and then seaweed feed once a week in the central section.
Deffo looks like a lack of water, keep that outer section wet.

  • Can you over water a tomato plant?

  • My understanding is that deliberately depriving them of water a bit helps the flavour, but I feel like it would be a struggle to drown one unless it was deliberate

  • I’ve got this patch of ground next to my drive way. I need to do something with it. Not sure what. The only problem is we have to walk on it to get into the car, and about half way down the car door needs to open and close.

Are there any plants that don’t mind being trodden on other than grass?

  • Creeping thyme?

  • Sounds good. Smells nice and flowers

  • Can you over water a tomato plant?

Definitely, the branches and leaves curl up like a pigs tail. And it’s particularly an issue if you drown it when the fruit are becoming ripe because they split and go mouldy.
It’s a bit like a new house plant - first year with toms I over watered, second year I under watered. Just about got the measure of it now but I’m still at the mercy of the weather as our greenhouse can get insanely hot even with all the vents open and a shade tarp covering one side.
It’s also one of the reasons I don’t use grow bags as I can’t judge how damp the compost is. But as you can see in my previous pictures, I keep my pots in trays and by the end of the seasons quite a few roots have made their way in for a drink. The airpots have a raised base inside so the compost isn’t completely sat in water.

  • Thanks all, I got those pots as they were cheap and were advertised as helping if you use a grow bag, who knows. Had read that you shouldn't feed them until they fruit, but may stick some seaweed in now, there are a couple of fruits coming through and when I can see more I will use some Tomorite and hope for the best. Grown from seed on a windowsill and I don't have a greenhouse so this was a hopeful experiment at best. Plan is to collect seeds from these and have another go next year, in about 30 years time the plants will be used to that spot*

    *inevitable total climate breakdown notwithstanding.

  • My tomatoes are outside and it's been pishing down rain in Belfast.

Have to see how they go... on the upside, 0 pest issues as they are planted in between other plants, are growing OK and the slugs don't eat them.

  • Creeping thyme is a good shout.

The only thing is that you'll need it to get established, so I'd start at one end and move your car down, then plant more at the other end and move your car up.

Try and get them in ASAP, because the growing conditions are great. He's a shit photo of what were little 3" pots. I'll try and get the variety and post it at some point - the dark purple has grown much faster.

  • Sometimes it's the little wins that are really satisfying.

Bought a hydrangea two(?) years ago. We spent ages dithering about where to plant it, then went on holiday. It all but died. I planted it. It started to sprout a few hopeful shoots only to be destroyed by slugs. After more care and judicious use of slug pellets, it has just about returned to the size we bought it and showing hope of a couple of flowers.

The rest of the garden is in such a state at the moment, it's nice to have moments like this.

I've also almost finished cleaning the patio with the optimistic aim of sealing it tomorrow evening. I think I'm just going to have to accept some cement marks. I'm just desperate now to get pots and tables back on it.

Protip: clean and pressure wash black limestone before laying. Then seal. Then make sure your trades clean it as they go and clean it again at the end of the day. Then again at the end of the job.

  • I know this is going to sound mental but have you tried toothpaste and a scrubbing brush to remove the cement marks? I only say this as we were having a barny with a brickie about the state he left a bull nose window sill by not cleaning off the quite severe mortar smudges. We couldn’t shift and he came back with toothpaste and made it 95% good.

  • Anyone out there with a green Acer Palm. Dissectum and care to show how orange it goes in autumn?

  • Eryngium looking nice and blue
