  • Those re-fuse tyres are so thin. You will be entering puncture town with them for sure.

  • yee!! for sure!! i was just gonna post this one here! great tip! THX

  • That's really impressive.

  • I'm after a cargo and toyed with an omnium but think I'd rather a long-tail'ish. I'd appreciate any pointers with the TERN.

I've settle on a Tern Quick Haul - Has anyone got any impartial long-term feedback on these and where is a good place to buy? I'm in Norwich but could travel to East London or Cambridge, or SURGE CYCLES seem to offer a decent amount of free accessories with a bike purchase - but they are miles away if I need warranty help.

Or do I get the non-electric TERN Short Haul (£1100) and add a bafang mid drive? works out cheaper and more upgradeable over the long-term?

    All tips much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Second this! Based on MCamb's recommendation I switched to these from Big Ben Plus and they've been awesome. I run mine tubeless but I assume they're great with tubes too.

Always wanted to do this but its an alu frame so brazing on batt mounts isnt possible .. will have to get creative, tbh I'd be open to a hub motor on that and control box can live in that dead space in rear-ish triangle.

  • Matching front and rear?
How did setting it up tubeless go?
What front rim are you using?

  • Cheers, yeah, the standard non electric Haul seems like a good deal considering the £3k electric one doesn't it, although components are crap.
Sure there's somewhere to mount the battery....
The idea of a bike specific battery and motor going obsolete in 6-7 years a bit annoying.
Mid or hub drive give freedom maybe.

Are the hub mounted motors difficult to mount? Assume they need to brace to the chainstay somehow? I've never looked into it.

I was tempted to make one... I did a conversion using the officinerecycle kits for somebody, and that was quick and simple to add to an old mtb, but the kit is pushing £1k+ with shipping and duty fees.
Thought it would be fun to make a cargo bike with a 'softride' carbon beam, but that's way in the future.

  • I've got a 47 rear 50 front.
I think the rear rim is Nextie and the front is Light Bicycle. Rear rim is tubeless, front isn't. Few extra wraps of tape until the tyres are tight enough, then just test with no sealant before finally adding it. They work perfectly tubeless for me. 😁

Oh, and I remove the reflective strips because I fucking hate them. 😂

  • You can buy without reflective strips but more common with. I don’t mind them :). Safety first ;-)

  • The only ones I can see in plain black are the 650 😕

  • Scratch that, I think it was the 16". I couldn't find the 20 or 29 in all black.

  • These https://www.wiggle.com/p/topeak-alt-position-bottle-cage-mounts
plus jubilee clip plus rubber strip to protect frame

  • Thinking out loud here, but I’m thinking about electrifying my budget cargo bike, but there’s a reinforcing spine under the BB that I think would interfere with a mid drive.

Given that the sturmey archer hub is already fucked, I’m thinking of replacing the rear wheel with a 26” hub drive. I’d love torque sensing to be built in, but maybe that ain’t gonna happen.

Ideally I’d find a crashed 26” e-MTB and grab the rear wheel, battery and gubbins and do a disc conversion on the rear.

  • Judging by the fairy lights, you've already electrified it! :)

    Cool photo!

  • Front hub motor is also an easy option

  • They’ll be in the centre aisle soon.

  • Still undecided about how I feel about Trek breaking into cargo, but at least the brand recognition will draw more attention to cargo in general.

  • Competition is good

  • Buy my Kona Ute!

  • This and giving one to the DH team is some top level marketing.

  • Doesn't seem to be healthy competition if the shops stocking Trek are pushed not to stock Tern.

Will be interesting to see if they expand the not wanting to repair ebikes policies to include Tern owners who got bikes from them to try and force them into buying the Trek GSDs.

    I think that's the idea.

What I'm concerned about is the same thing I was concerned about when Trek started making e-bikes: Trek dealers that have no interest in cargo being strong-armed into carrying cargo not taking cargo seriously. In relation to the cable-steering bakfiets it's especially unnerving for me having worked with a number of mechanics that simply don't put any effort into working on bikes they aren't interested in personally.

  • I spoke to a Tern dealer yesterday and they said that the UK distributor has gone bust.
Tern are trying to sort another one apparently. That's what they said anyway.
