• I've signed up for the Summercross round 1 race but I have no idea what the fuck I am doing.

Is there anywhere in SE London I can train on my own that might be similar to a CX track?
I know HHV do courses and I've signed up for 1 but I don't want to pay £11 every time I want to practice cornering.

  • Happy to be corrected by people who are actually good at CX but starting out I think it comes down to three aspects: top end fitness, general tekkers, and dis and re-mounting. Because it's an actual race people go hard. If you don't have a lot of off road or remounting experience then having a good one-hour engine can see you mix with the group and have a lot of fun. Secondly is the general tekkers, ie keeping it upright after hitting a nasty root, doing tight corners fast etc - NCN 21 / general off-road shit (on whatever tyre you're going to race on) will help with this if you've got time. And then yeah there is lay some sticks down in a park and practice jumping / mounting / dismounting. For a first race I'd say the engine is the most important, then the general tekkers, and then the mounting and remounting, especially for summer cross where it's likely to be dry and grassy and fast. You'll see gains by having all three, but for a fast summer course I'd say there are more gains (and you're more likely to be in the mix) if you focus on 1 and 2.
